“Yeah – clothes, passports, plenty of cash from the safe in the library. I called Rayner, she was sleeping but her butler or whatever said she’d told him about us so we’re good to go,” he replied, shrugging. “We just need to go get on the boat.”

“How are you going to keep Corbijn safe?” Tamesis asked, her eyes bright with something not far from fear. “He’s going to be weak after the ceremony, Eren. I don’t know if we can risk moving him…”

“We can’t stay here!” I yelled, my grip on what was left of my patience slipping. “I take it Noah knows that you know what he’s been up to and so he probably knows you’ve told me. Which means he knows that I’m gunning for him. He’ll expect me to come after him and maybe I will one day, but not today. I’m getting Corbijn the fuck out of here, right the hell now.”

“I’m with you,” Andy said with a solemn nod. “Let’s get this show on the road.”

It took about half an hour for Tamesis and Andy to set up the ceremony in the living room while I helped Corbijn get up and get dressed. He’d been so looking forward to starting our life together, I really hoped Noah hadn’t destroyed that for him.

“I know you love it here,” I said, sighing as I brushed his hair back from his face. “But we really can’t stay.”

“We can come back sometime,” Corbijn replied, smiling his secret smile at me. “We have all the time in the world.”

I curled my fingers in the soft jet black hair at the nape of his neck and held on, for just a moment, as I kissed him. I would be happy to come back to Paris, some day when Noah Pimennys was dust and the lock we’d put on the Pont des Arts bridge was caked with rust. We could come back and replace it maybe, add a new lock, renew our promise to each other. I wanted that, the distant future that was shrouded in the mist of uncertainty apart from one solid, certain fact – I’d be with Corbijn. We’d be together, happy and healthy and whole. That was all I knew about our future, but I was sure as hell going to fight for it.

“I want you to hold on to
