Chapter Six

Harley glanced toward the second floor of the club. He’d left Lester sleeping in one of the rooms while he went back to work. Not even the quick shower that Harley had taken seemed to ease the burning ache inside of him. He wanted more of Lester, to bury himself deep and never come up for air.

“I know that look.” Christian stepped outside, his hands tucked into the front pockets of his slacks. “I’m told you found your mate.”

Harley scrubbed the exiting human’s mind as he nodded. “I did.” Normally Harley was a fun-loving guy, but he was starting to resent his job. He hated to be away from his mate and staring at this crowd only deepened his sour mood.

“Then why are you here?” Christian asked.

Harley frowned and wondered where Christian was going with his question. “Doing my job?”

The prince frowned. “Harley, you know as well as I that you are very powerful when it comes to what you do, but there are others who can take over while you enjoy your mating.”

“Things are already hokey around here. You can’t afford to have so many men taking turns outside the club.”

“Mates come first,” Christian stated in a tone that brooked no argument. The prince held up his hand when Harley started to argue. “There are plenty of men who would be willing to stand here instead of working inside the club. It will be a good change of pace for them and help them to strengthen their skills.”

“But—”

“I’m ordering you to take two weeks off and indulge in your mate. I’m pretty sure this place won’t fall apart while you’re gone.”

The problem was, where would Harley stay? He wanted to stay near Lester so he could see Lester’s side of life and become an integral part of that life.

“Dante has already agreed to let you stay at his home.”

Harley’s hope spiked. He didn’t wait for Christian to say anything else. He hurried back into the club, up the stairs, and into the bedroom. Lester was still fast asleep.

He pulled the sheet around Lester, grabbed the man’s clothes, and disseminated to Dante’s driveway. The vampire was standing there, a smirk on his face. “I should have known something was up when Lester came to me, looking for you.”

Dante opened the side door and let Harley in. It was almost three in the morning. The house was dark, quiet. Dante showed Harley to a guest bedroom and then left him and Lester alone. Harley placed Lester on the bed and then took a seat, gazing down at his mate and wondering what he was going to do now. Scrubbing had been his job since the Manacle had first opened, and before that, he’d worked for Christian close to three hundred years as security down in South America when Christian ran a night club in a small town located in southern Argentina.
