CHAPTER 21
THE DRAGON
Silence. Days. The two merged, mixing and morphing into torturous hours of festering hate. Although I couldnât find the Sea Serpent guilty of anything, I wasnât satisfied to sit across from a man I didnât trust. And Iâd be a fool to trust Antonio Barchey.
The dark-haired man was my youngest captain. He was former navy, and deadlier than anyone in his position. Smarter, too. He was not from the US, but France, and although he appeared clean from any sort of suspicious activities, I wouldnât allow myself not to stay on guard. I couldnât afford to relax. Not that Iâd be able to, even if I did believe the man was truly working. Whether it was his thick accent, the long ponytail he kept messing with, or his attitude that was triggering my temper, I wasnât sure. Now that I knew I had no reason to kill him, I wanted to be alone. I wanted a moment to think about how my wife was doing. I wanted to stew in my silent fantasies of mutilation and murder for the next person who wasnât going to be so lucky. My soldiers and Antonio were making it impossible, even if they werenât directly talking to me.
âAustin Birch? I have no idea where he is. Not out here or anywhere close. At least not that Iâve heard. I donât understand. What does he have to do with Lisbon?â
âNone of your business.â Whiteâs eyes were cut up as he nibbled on crackers. He was still pale, and the sickness was bringing out his temper.
âI keep getting that from all of you. Am I not supposed to know whatâs going on? Frankly, Iâm fucking confused as hell. You get on my ship. You tear it apart. You grill the hell out of me and my crew. We havenât done anything wrong. I know Iâm a few weeks late, but thatâs because I wanted to meet quota first.â
âWeâre not here because youâre late,â White said, deepening his tone.
âThen what the hell is this about? Main Master, please.â
âNo. You talk to me,â White continued. âDid we announce our arrival before we took over this ship?â At the aggravation growing in Antonio, his stare narrowed even more towards White, but he stayed silent as my soldier kept going. âIf we wanted you to know why weâre here, we would offer the information. We havenât, and we wonât. And correctionâ¦this is the Main Masterâs ship, not yours. You answer what we ask and stop asking questions.â
The captainâs gaze cut over to mine. I hadnât said a word up to this point and didnât want to now, but I had to keep any trust and loyalty this man had to me.
âMy wife and our twins were killed.â
âIâ¦â Surprise. Shock. Antonio couldnât hide them as his gaze lowered.
âYou didnât know.â
âNo, Main Master. Iâmâ¦sorry. I got the call to come back early, but I didnât want to show up without my numbers.â His eyes jumped to mine. âFuck. Iâm so damn sorry.
