CHAPTER 9

The night sky was dark with only the light of the full moon breaking through the trees. Red changed the heels for a pair of boots she had inside the carriage, which they had left midway through the woods, continuing on foot the rest of the way toward Aria’s castle.

Getting that key was their only option for drawing out the alpha, then she could finally execute her long-awaited vengeance.

A howling in the distance alerted Red, and she looked at Will. The wolves were also headed to Aria’s castle, and the scowl in Will’s expression told her he was also surprised about the unexpected company, but he didn’t look afraid.

“Looks like we’re not alone.” Will’s voice came out in almost a growl. “Aria must’ve made a deal with the wolves for the key.”

“And Little John was in on it!” Robin grabbed an arrow from his quiver as if reserving that one alone for Little John himself. “Wait until I get my hands on him.”

“We should split up,” Will suggested, moving his feet as if he couldn’t wait to take off running. “I’ll keep tracking Little John.”

“I’ll look for Aria––” Red said, but Will shook his head and gave her a concerned look.

“We should find your cloak first,” he said. “You shouldn’t go face to face with her without an escape plan.”

“She won’t hurt me.”

“This isn’t Aria we’re dealing with,” Robin added. “It’s The Snow Queen, and you can leave her to me.”

Red gave him a pointed look. “Don’t hurt her.”

“Sorry, Red, but it’s about time somebody knocks that princess off her frozen horse.” He swung on his heels and darted to the north side of the castle.

Red turned to Will and caught him sniffing the air. “What are you doing?”

“Uh, I thought I smelled something.”

“Really?” She put a hand on her hip. “Let me guess, it smells like The Prince? Is that going to be a recurring joke for you now? You know what, it doesn’t even matter because whomever I kiss is none of your business. And I’ll have you know, I actually liked the breath of cigar and liquor.”

Will’s lips lifted into an amused smile as he crossed his arms. “Is that right?”

“That’s right, and if he doesn’t find out that it was me who stole the key from him, who knows… there may even be a second date.” She turned on her heels and stomped toward the south side of the palace. It took Will a few seconds to follow, and when he did, she could sense him grinning behind her.

Eventually, he took the lead, and they came to the mouth of a tunnel. It was dark inside, and although the moon lit up the night, it only illuminated so far.

Will stepped inside without hesitation, and Red hurried after him. “Can you see anything?” she asked, her soft voice echoing in the dark.

“I can see enough,” he said, then a moment later she felt his hand grab hers, and it sent tingles up her arm. “Just stay close to me.
