CHAPTER 9
The night sky was dark with only the light of the full moon breaking through the trees. Red changed the heels for a pair of boots she had inside the carriage, which they had left midway through the woods, continuing on foot the rest of the way toward Ariaâs castle.
Getting that key was their only option for drawing out the alpha, then she could finally execute her long-awaited vengeance.
A howling in the distance alerted Red, and she looked at Will. The wolves were also headed to Ariaâs castle, and the scowl in Willâs expression told her he was also surprised about the unexpected company, but he didnât look afraid.
âLooks like weâre not alone.â Willâs voice came out in almost a growl. âAria mustâve made a deal with the wolves for the key.â
âAnd Little John was in on it!â Robin grabbed an arrow from his quiver as if reserving that one alone for Little John himself. âWait until I get my hands on him.â
âWe should split up,â Will suggested, moving his feet as if he couldnât wait to take off running. âIâll keep tracking Little John.â
âIâll look for Ariaâââ Red said, but Will shook his head and gave her a concerned look.
âWe should find your cloak first,â he said. âYou shouldnât go face to face with her without an escape plan.â
âShe wonât hurt me.â
âThis isnât Aria weâre dealing with,â Robin added. âItâs The Snow Queen, and you can leave her to me.â
Red gave him a pointed look. âDonât hurt her.â
âSorry, Red, but itâs about time somebody knocks that princess off her frozen horse.â He swung on his heels and darted to the north side of the castle.
Red turned to Will and caught him sniffing the air. âWhat are you doing?â
âUh, I thought I smelled something.â
âReally?â She put a hand on her hip. âLet me guess, it smells like The Prince? Is that going to be a recurring joke for you now? You know what, it doesnât even matter because whomever I kiss is none of your business. And Iâll have you know, I actually liked the breath of cigar and liquor.â
Willâs lips lifted into an amused smile as he crossed his arms. âIs that right?â
âThatâs right, and if he doesnât find out that it was me who stole the key from him, who knows⦠there may even be a second date.â She turned on her heels and stomped toward the south side of the palace. It took Will a few seconds to follow, and when he did, she could sense him grinning behind her.
Eventually, he took the lead, and they came to the mouth of a tunnel. It was dark inside, and although the moon lit up the night, it only illuminated so far.
Will stepped inside without hesitation, and Red hurried after him. âCan you see anything?â she asked, her soft voice echoing in the dark.
âI can see enough,â he said, then a moment later she felt his hand grab hers, and it sent tingles up her arm. âJust stay close to me.
