âThatâs it, man,â Rumaldo Salto announced. âI think Hectorâs lost his mind.â
âHey, home slice, you best not say that too loud,â Rico Cazuela, one of Saltoâs crewmembers, replied. Cazuela had always been a kiss-ass but he was as loyal as they came. A former courier like Salto, Cazuelaâs recruitment into their very closed organization had been personally approved by Casco. Casco believed in treating his people like family once they proved themselves. Thatâs something Salto couldnât fault him for, and he maintained his loyalty for that reason alone. Cazuela added, âHector hears you talking like that, heâs likely to cut off your balls with a dull knife.â
âThatâs for sure,â Ricky Preciado added. âThe bossâs never been a guy who puts up with somebody questioning his orders. He tells you to do something and you do it, otherwise youâre likely to end up in the grave.â
Preciado wasnât any different than Cazuela, except maybe he was a bit smarter. Preciado had been educated in one of the finest schools in Mexico City. There were few people working for Casco who could say that, Salto included. In spite of his education, though, Preciado didnât seem all that bright. It was probably one of the reasons Salto had taken the lead position after Cascoâs last house boss ended up getting drunk and mouthing off to a member of Los Zetas. Still, it was Saltoâs job to keep things under control and carry out Cascoâs instructions to the letter, whether he agreed with them or not. If Cazuela was right about anything, it was that Casco wouldnât put up with disobedience of any kind. The man viewed doing what you were told as the tourist measure of loyaltyâand Salto wasnât about to do something that would make his boss think he wasnât loyal. If he was planning to do that, it wouldâve been better for him to just put the gun to his head and pull the trigger himself.
Still, this plan seemed a little over the topâcrazier than anything Casco had ever asked him to do before. Salto had to admit the idea of attempting to kidnap a high-ranking official like the governor was ballsy and nobody could deny it, but that still didnât make it a smart move. Salto had to ask himself if heâd be able to pull it off when the moment came. He hadnât been able to bust a cap on Claudiaâhe only hoped the stupid bitch understood it would mean both their lives if she ever returned to Phoenixâwhich made him think that somewhere along the line heâd become squeamish.
A few years ago, nobody would have ever described him that way. When Salto had joined Los Negros, even before he became house boss, heâd acquired a reputation as a tough professional. Had he developed a conscience? Maybe he had, but it wouldnât do him any good to run down the boss or his plan in front of Cazuela and Preciado. Heâd never known either of them to repeat anything they
