On the drive back, Gen caressed Yancy’s hand gently. They listened to the quiet strains of guitar and sax on the satellite radio’s jazz station. The silence was comforting, although a slight tinge of anxiety began to creep up on Gen the closer they came to town. Yancy parked in front of Gen’s house.

Gen hesitated, then said with a smile, “Would you like to come in?”

Yancy swallowed hard. “I, uh. I’m having a hard time.”

“What?” Gen asked softly.

Yancy looked down at their clasped hands. “I’m not sure what to do. Oh, hell.” She put her head back on the headrest and looked out her window.

“Tell me.” Was Yancy just as nervous as Gen was?

“You’re the first person I have felt anything with since Trisha. I don’t know how to be. You’re not the fuck of the week.” Yancy beat her hands once on the steering wheel. “Damn! I’m so sorry. That was crass. I didn’t mean it like that.” Yancy’s eyes implored Gen. Gen weighed Yancy’s statement while confused feelings of fear and regret wrestled with attraction, sexual excitement, and fascination. She looked into Yancy’s eyes, drew Yancy’s face to her, gently stroked her jaw, then kissed her lips softly. Yancy responded, deepening it. They kissed for what seemed like several minutes.

Gen contemplated how to proceed. She broke the kiss and said breathlessly, “You mean something to me, too, Yancy. But I need to take things slow. Can we do that?”

Yancy blew out a breath, kissed Gen harder, grasped the back of her head and stroked the nape, and nuzzled her neck. “Oh, God. I want to go slow, but I also can hardly stand what’s building up inside me. I feel like a horse that’s trying to take the lead away from the rider, who keeps reining me in. Damned if the rider isn’t me, too.”

Gen felt relieved in a way, knowing Yancy felt as confused just as she did. She looked on her with compassion and understanding as she leaned her forehead on Yancy’s, her hands stroking Yancy’s arms. “Nothing need happen. I am not going anywhere.”

“I want so much to happen. I want to be near you, I want my hands all over you. But I can’t yet. I’m still caught up with whatever craziness has me. I swear, Gen, I am trying to get past it. I hope I can be the person you need me to be.”

“Oh, rancher.” Gen sighed into Yancy’s neck. “You’re going through a lot of inner searching right now. I don’t feel you and I together need to wade into the waters you have just begun to dip into.”

“Yeah.” Yancy let out a small moan. “I should let things go at a slow trot until I get the lay of the land. But damn, part of me wants to gallop into the night with you.” She kissed her deeply, then pulled back. They locked eyes. Yancy took a shuddering breath. “If we were to date, what would that look like?”

Gen’s heart took flight with happiness.
