The next morning, I woke, got dressed, grabbed my bag with a few clean clothes in it to restock my drawer and closet space at Ward's, and opened my front door. I stopped when I noticed a black rose with a knife through it piercing the doormat.

"What the hell?" I breathed.

Because I had a class in criminal law, I knew I shouldn't touch it. Instead, I took a picture and sent it to Ward.

Me: This was left at my door. Do you think I should call the police?

Instead of texting back, Ward called.

"Hey," I greeted.

"Was that left when someone knocked?"

"I don't know. Would someone knock and leave it? What if I had opened the door and saw who it was?"

"True. Maybe they knocked to see if you were home, then came back," Ward suggested.

I didn't like that someone was at my door. What if they had tried to break in, thinking I wasn't home? I had used the deadbolt, but it was still scary to think about, considering I was home alone.

"I'll call Alec and see what to do. I'm on my way."

"Okay."

We hung up, and I went inside to wait for him.
