Chapter 18

“She’ll be fine, sweetie, she knows what she’s doing,” Rhodey said, coming up behind his wife, who was anxiously looking out the back window from the second floor of their home, watching their daughter sit cross-legged in the middle of the their backyard in nothing but moonlight.

“How can any of this be real, Rhodey? She’s our daughter and we’re just…what? Going to let her stay out there all day and night where she can freeze to death?”

Rhodey chuckled. “Babe, I don’t think the kid even feels the cold. She’s stronger than both of us. You saw her bring in the Lius over her shoulders along with that bulky guitar case. We just need to believe in her.”

His wife sighed in defeat. “I-I know. But…it’s still tough for me to wrap my brain around all of this, y’know?” He nodded in agreement. He really did understand. It’s just that there was nothing they could do about it. They were practically powerless in front of Vestiges and tenrai creatures. They could only rely on their daughter right now, which galled him as a father. He was supposed to be the one protecting her, not the other way around.

“We have to get back to training, babe,” he said, squeezing his wife’s shoulder. “If we want to help Lia, then we can’t just be deadweight that she has to lug around. I know you don’t want to fight and believe me, I plan on doing as much as I can to prevent that, but you still need to get better with your Breath technique and find your Soulshard’s Lash technique.”

His wife harrumphed in annoyance, turning away from the window. “I can’t believe you already found yours. How did you even do it so fast? Lia walked us through it together and I still can’t find the image that my Lash technique is supposed to have.”

“I just saw its outline, I haven’t been able to use it yet,” he deflected. “But, to be honest, sweetie, we probably need to spend more time doing what Lia’s doing. She’s been cycling her tensei all night ever since she let Raf come back into the house. Or you can try that exercise I developed. I found my Lash after I’d been practicing with wind tensei yesterday. Maybe you should practice handling your water tensei in between cycling your Breath technique? I figure it can’t hurt until Lia is ready to actually teach us how to use our Lashes.”

His wife opened her mouth to say something, but a voice from downstairs interrupted her. “Mom! Pop! Mrs. Grace and Cindy are awake!”

Rhodey quickly hurried to the stairs, but his wife stayed back for a moment longer to look down at their daughter again. However, all she saw was an empty backyard.
