CHAPTER 18
Harlow
âHoney. Itâs so good youâre home,â Mom says the following morning as Iâm standing in the kitchen at the window, looking out over the back lawn. Her heels click across the tile floor as she heads for the coffeepot.
I turn around, clasping my hands around the mug Iâm holding. âI waited up for you last night.â
Her spine stiffens. âWe were out late.â She busies herself making coffee.
I walk toward her, pressing my hip into the counter and facing her. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine,â she says, finally glancing at me, and I bite down hard on the inside of my cheek.
Gently, I turn her face toward me. Sheâs wearing a ton of makeup, but itâs still not enough to disguise the swelling on her left cheek, and thereâs no disguising the cut on her lip.
She pulls her face out of my grip. âDonât, honey.â
âWhy are you with him, Mom?â
âI love him.â Sheâs quick to reply as she removes bread from the breadbox.
âIâm not buying it.â
She pops the bread in the toaster, still averting her gaze. âI know that, and I hope in time youâll warm to him.â
I harrumph. âThat will never happen. Heâs a monster.â
Iâd love to tell her what he expects of me. That heâs salivating at the prospect of fucking me with his perverted buddies. But I wonât expose her to those truths because itâs not safe for her to know.
Doesnât mean I canât drop a few clues.
I shudder on purpose. âAnd I hate how he looks at me sometimes and how heâs finding more and more opportunities to touch me.â
Her face pales before she catches herself. âIâm sure youâre imagining it. Heâs just trying to get closer to you, stepfather to stepdaughter.â
I canât tell if sheâs trying to convince herself or me. âYeah, Iâm sure thatâs it.â Sarcasm drips from my tone. âNot that heâs a sick bastard with grabby hands and perverted ideas.â
She rubs at her temples. âHarlow, you canât talk about him like that.â She grabs my hands, her eyes pleading with me. âBut if he makes you feel uncomfortable, perhaps, itâs best you keep your distance and do nothing to upset him.â
Her changing thoughts are giving me whiplash. âHow about you give that pep talk to him, huh?â
Air whooshes out of her mouth, and she lets go of my hands, rubbing her temples again. âCan you please try? For my sake?â
âWhy should I, Mom?â I top up my coffee as acid churns in my gut.
âBecause you donât have much longer left in this house, and itâll be a much more pleasant experience for everyone if you act civil toward him.â
I shake my head. Un-fucking-believable. Heâs using her as his punching bag, and sheâs trying to smooth things over so I donât upset him. Sheâs so weak it makes me sick. âWhat happened to you? Or are you so blind you canât see what heâs doing to you?â
Her shoulders straighten, and the softness in her features evaporates. âMy relationship is none of your business, Harlow. And all I ask is that you donât argue with him.
