Present Day . . .
Erwin glanced over at Jake, and knew he must be remembering the same thing. Jakeâs face was tense as his eyes moved over the river. Both men were still, lost in their thoughts as the other soldiers rushed to kneel at the river's edge. They splashed water on their faces and hair, and drank from their cupped hands.
Erwin decided they would camp there for the night. They erected a few tents, and tied hammocks between trees. The men were fatigued and eager to lie down. Erwin had seen various fruit trees on the way, so he sent a small group to collect for everyone. When the men returned, they sat together to eat the fruit, along with the meager provisions they had carried with them from the underground. It was almost dusk before the men finally settled.
The night was terribly uncomfortable, at least for Erwin. He lay on the grass, attentive to the mysterious stillness all around him, and the feel of the cool air blowing against his skin. The amplified songs of insects creaking, whistling, or chirping nearby filled the air. He took a deep breath and tried to relax, looking up into a black sky that sparkled. A cloud or two would sail by, reminding him of the endless spin he was stranded in. His eyes focused on a dark ball among the stars. He smirked, wondering if it was planet Graiis. Maybe Braii was in her bed thinking of him.
He knew the hour was late, and tried to force himself to sleep. Each time he would fall, only minutes later his heart would start racing and wake him up. It was like the fear of waking from a nightmare, but without the images to justify it. He took long, deep breaths trying to slow the rapid beating of his heart, longing to obtain the ever elusive âgood nightâs rest.â In the end, he settled for the usual three or four hours that were only attainable after his body reached the point of extreme exhaustion.
He rose early to a clear blue, and beautiful sky. The morning sun was rising, but had not yet reached a point where her rays poured through the forest's shady canopy above. He woke the men, and told them to eat before beginning their work. They were going to build a base camp right there in the middle of the forest.
Due to their years of service, they were strong, and many of them were skilled. This was one of the reasons he decided to take them to the forest. He had taken it upon himself to match the Kayorian offer of freedom. Instead of forcing his soldiers to divide their time between their work above, and training below, he declared them full-time soldiers and freed them. A move the North said was illegal and invalid, but didnât have enough military support to stop him. The Kayorians sent reports to their governors, but thanks to the lack of efficiency among them, it would be weeks before they had an accurate listing of all the men who were now missing.
