Chapter 16

Not too long after Umbra left, Sapphra finally returned to the inn. She found Zeke and I sitting at a table and could tell we were not too happy.

“Is something wrong?” she asked.

She sat down and we explained what had transpired with the Magister to her. She remained quiet the whole time and listened intently. When I got to the part where Zeke’s energy was being stolen, I became too flustered to continue, so Zeke finished the story up.

“I’m not sure I’ll ever sleep soundly knowing that guy is around the corner,” I muttered at the end, taking a huge bite off the steak I had been brought. “Go figure someone like him showed up once Asinus was out of our hair.”

“I heard some things about Magister Umbra growing up,” Sapphra stated. “The camp that he runs is far to the north and I believe it mainly focuses on those with a talent for stealthier operations. Nothing I remember hearing was particularly good, either.”

Zeke, who was still tired from being drained, looked back and forth between Sapphra and me. I was clearly irritated and Sapphra was just pondering at this point. In any case, he decided to save the day by trying to change the subject.

“So, you really don’t remember anything about your past?” Zeke exclaimed. “That’s intense.”

“Well, it seems like maybe it will come back over time,” Sapphra chimed in. “You did remember how to use your Gift, after all.”

“That’s true, maybe you’re right.”

I made sure not to hesitate. I wanted to trust her badly with my secret, especially since we were going to be on the same team. This just didn’t seem like the time nor the place, though. Regardless, I knew I wanted to tell both prior to us getting off this island. It may be crucial to us surviving once our training is over.

My thoughts were quelled, however, as an unexpected visitor came up to our table.

“I trust you’ve had a productive day in the woods?”

Magister Xahen was standing behind Zeke, looking over the table full of empty plates and cups. I wondered if he could tell that I always got nervous at his arrival.

“M…Magister!” Zeke stuttered; standing and bowing his head. “It is an honor to be able to speak with you! Our adventures were very productive; thank you for asking!”

The Magister nodded in acknowledgement, but it was more of a formality than anything. He quickly turned his attention towards me.

“If you are able, I would like to speak with you at my office,” he announced. “There was something recently discovered at the crater site that may help us solve the mystery of your memory loss.”

There was no way he came all the way here in the middle of the night just to tell me that. He easily could’ve sent Martyn or another guard to explain that to me. No, this was for something else.

“That sounds very interesting,” I admitted. “Perhaps it is something we could look at in the morning once I’m fully rested?”

“Under normal circumstances, that would be fine.
