Prologue

Jamie was too pleased with himself and Cypress couldn’t entirely blame him. After all, he had been right.

About the last show, Cypress thought grimly. He’s one for two. Do I really want to keep up with this?

True, he wasn’t putting much more than his name and money to the process, but still, Cypress couldn’t help but feel like he was getting sucked into a life that he had been against from the start.

“This is going to be a little bit heavier,” Jamie explained. “But—”

“Whoa, wait a second,” the actor interrupted. “You have another show lined up already? Office Gossip barely just aired.”

“And to what ratings?” Jamie insisted. “We need to strike while the iron’s hot!”

Cypress gritted his teeth. He wished that Graciela would stick around for these meetings sometimes, but he knew there was a reason she made herself scarce when the agent appeared.

She doesn’t want any part of this, he thought with a sigh. Because if it fails, she wants to make sure I fail on my own.

It wasn’t really a fair statement. After all, Office Gossip was doing much better than Con Lair already and Graciela certainly wasn’t looking for any recognition.

No, Cypress thought, sighing. She’s just smart enough to stay out of the way altogether.

“What do you say, Cy? Are you up for a new challenge?”

Cypress wasn’t sure he liked Jamie’s tone and said as much.

“Am I becoming the reality star king now?” Cypress demanded, a sour taste in his mouth as he said it.

“Why not?” Jamie shrugged. “If it works and you aren’t taking on any other movie gigs, don’t you want to invest somewhere?”

This is how he keeps getting me, Cy thought with a begrudging respect. He keeps selling it to me like I’m doing something worthwhile.

“Fine,” he relented. “What is this one?”

“Well, after the slight mess Mason International made with their employees,” Jamie began, “we’re looking at something a little more feel-good, more transparent.”

“I thought the employees at Mason were on board,” Cypress said quickly, his eyes narrowing in concern. “Don’t tell me we have lawsuits because of their secret filming.”

“No, no,” Jamie laughed. “Nothing like that. I just wanted to ensure our next project is more… I don’t know… lighthearted.”

Cypress found his brow raising curiously.

“All right,” he conceded. “You have my attention. What’s on your mind?”

“It’s another hot topic,” Jamie began. “Babies and—”

“I don’t need the entire pitch,” Cypress interjected. “Just tell me what the premise is.”

“Well, after Kim K and Kanye made news with their last child, surrogacy is being looked at with more interest.”

Cypress had had no idea that the couple had used a surrogate but it didn’t matter. He was beginning to believe anything that Jamie put out there.

If I don’t make money, he’s not going to make money, Cypress reasoned.

“It sounds a little intrusive,” Cypress heard himself mutter. “I mean, will we find a woman willing to share her surrogacy on camera?”

Jamie eyed him skeptically.

“Have you learned nothing about being in Hollywood?” he demanded. “There are people willing to share everything on camera.
