“Mrs. Logan, your wife is on line two,” Yvonne said to me.

“Thank you.”

“And your father’s car will be picked up for repair at one o’clock.”

“Did Mr. Campbell say how long it would take to be completed?”

“He said you’re not to worry about it; he’s working out the details with your father.”

“Good. Did you tell him to send me the bill and not my dad?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Thank you,” I said and picked up the phone. “Hi, sweetheart.”

“Imagine my disappointment when I came home and you weren’t here. You told me you’d…”

“I know, babe, but I started to work and lost track of time. I’m leaving here right now. I’ll see you in a little bit,” I said as I started to neatly return the things on my desk to their place.

“OK, babe. I’m going to shower and be ready for you. Lunch is already prepared so don’t stop to get anything,” she said.

“OK. Bye.”

I looked over at the couch where Ariana and I made love and I missed her. She had not called me, and I decided to give her the time she asked for while waiting on her to contact me if she wanted. I kept checking my phone to see if she sent a message, despite my cell phone being on the highest volume. She was upset when I shouted at her and left, which was something I did after giving lots of chances to not push me to the limit. I never just flew off the rails at the first sign of frustration or anger, however, whenever I did, it was so frightening and unexpected that it usually resulted in the desired response.

I picked up my phone to call, but put it in my bag instead and made my way home. As I got closer to my house, my body started to prepare itself for a possible burst of emotions, mainly shame and regret for cheating on my wife when there was no reason to. She didn’t deserve what I did, and I had no idea how I was going to react to seeing her for the first time since being unfaithful. My hands started to shake and Elizabeth knew me so well that she might just pick up on it. I hoped not because it would ruin the plan that Ariana and I had to stay in each other’s life.

The moment I saw my house and knew that my wife was inside, I started having difficulty breathing. I took deep breaths before driving into the garage. Sometimes, Liz would meet me at the door, but she was probably still in the bathroom. I walked through the kitchen and into the dining room. I stopped, trying to decide if I should go up to her or run to my office to hide. I chose the latter.

I closed my office door and placed my bag on the sofa. I sat and rested my face in my hands as I tried to gather the strength to face my wife without breaking.
