Chapter 13

-Sidney-

Time was moving far too quickly for comfort. Before he knew it, two weeks had gone, and his problems were not getting better, at least, not all of them. The illness, since the water had been cut off, was not getting worse, but it certainly wasn’t getting better. The only cases of infection were people who had come into contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of people who were already infected.

Despite the risk to the rest of his population, Sidney orchestrated the transport of a single infected person to the main part of the city, where there was a healing aura. Unfortunately, it had no effect, because as it would seem, they were dealing with not an illness per se, but a mechanical menace.

They found a way to keep people alive. A powerful caster in Swethvarn knew the restoration spell. It was a stall at best, but they had to do what they could. Sidney had equipped the caster with a power armor just to keep her in mana because she had to cast the spell so often.

However, that was not the task at hand. Jeremiah was in Throna dealing with that problem because at the moment, there was nothing that Sidney could do about it, and his efforts would be better suited elsewhere.

It just so happened that the first squadron of mechs was ready to roll out. There were a dozen new mechs with newly trained pilots, including the three original pilots and their mechs. They were split into three groups of four mechs. Sidney had Alpha positioned at the front of the group.

He had made a few adjustments to his mech avatar. Inside, he included a chamber for a Nova to ride. That way, if Alpha was taken down, or if he wanted to get out for some reason, he had the option.

The squadron marched north from the Swethvarn wall into the forest. Sidney had one destination in mind and that was the monolith where they had faced the rhinos. He was jonesing for a rematch, and he wasn’t going to limp away like they had done the first time. He was ready to fight with Alpha to the end if he had to.

“Everyone, our target is the monolith,” Zach said over the mech’s comm system. “Opposition is likely to be men on foot, some magic users, and there are massive clockwork rhinos. These guys are our main concern. They devastated the APCs and tanks.”

“I want you all to work together. I also want everyone to stay on their toes,” Sidney said, making sure to throw in his two cents.

They broke through the trees, and there was no way that their stomping was not heard from miles away. Alpha came to a stop in front of the clockwork monolith. The rest of the squadron skidded to a halt around the clearing.

It was a waiting game. The last time that they were around this monolith, it hadn’t been long before the rhinos had attacked them, but this time they just stood in silence.
