CHAPTER XIII
They walked in silence for a while, nothing to be heard but their crunching feet, the whistling of the wind, and their own breathing.
It was Keeza who first broke the silence between them.
âRipper...do you believe Jak?â she asked.
âWhat?â he asked, glancing at her. âAbout what?â
âMe.â
He was silent for a moment. âI believe that he believes heâs telling the truth.â
âThat wasnât really an answer,â Jak said.
Ripper sighed, his breath coming out in a heavy fog. âI donât know! Iâve spent my entire life hating the embyr. There was a time, and it wasnât all that long ago, that I swore I would kill them all. That I would attack them on sight. And now thereâs one here before me, and youâre telling me she fought and bled for my people? After enslaving themââ
âI never had a hand in any of that,â Keeza said.
âYou didnât stop it,â he growled.
âWhat was I to do? Take on an entire army of your people and my own people?! I didnât even know how it was done. Jak, Nessa, they all asked me and I would have told them immediately if Iâd had even a tiny idea of how it was done!â
Silence fell again.
Finally, Ripper sighed once more. âFine,â he said. âIf youâre asking me here and now if I believe what youâre telling me...then the answer is yes, much to my surprise. I have a hard time...making sense of that. Like I said: my whole life, I hated your people. But...Jak has been telling me almost since the first day we met that some of my ideas are wrong. About strength and weakness. About what it means to be a tribemaster. About trust, and people from different tribes, different races.â
âAnd? Do you believe him?â Keeza asked.
âYeah, I have to answer truthfully that I do. I didnât at first, or I didnât want to, really. But he had a lot of good points. I have known humans who were brave and trustworthy, and karn who were cruel and cowardly, who broke their word as easily as they breathed. Who lied to me. I guess it was something Iâve always known but never wanted to believe: the shape of your face or the color of your skin doesnât mean a thing about who you are, and trying to see the world that way is...wrong. Itâs not so easy as karn are good and embyr are bad.â
âYou wish it was though,â Jak said.
âYes...maybe. I donât know. Iâve made good friends among the humans, the elves. You are an honorary karn at this point, my brethren, Jak, for all you have done for us.â
âA simple rule of karn good, others bad would mean we never would have met,â Jak said.
âYeah, I know. I donât want it, but I wish things were easier, sometimes.â
âEasy is often an illusion,â Keeza murmured.
âThat...is very true,â Ripper admitted. He laughed softly. âWeâve barely spent any time together and Iâm already agreeing with an embyr.â
âWeâll make a big, friendly tribemaster out of you yet,â Jak said.
