Chapter Eleven

Cash

My brother sits across from me in his living room, the two of us enjoying a beer after the day we had at the hospital. Well, more than a single beer. One beer wouldn’t be enough. Not for me, at least.

Every time I see my mother in that bed, even if she’s able to get up and walk around whenever she wants to, it’s like someone dropping a hundred pound weight on my chest. That’s why I’m on my fifth and plan to keep drinking until I can’t think anymore.

“Try the egg rolls. They’re made with steak and imported provolone cheese,” Alex proudly says as he pushes the plate full of them toward me across the coffee table.

I grab one and bite into it. Like with everything he makes, it’s incredible.

“How do you do it? The last thing I want to do is make anything to eat after today. I swear to God if they don’t let her out soon, I’m going to lose it.”

He takes a drink of his beer and shrugs. “This is how I handle things. Making food helps me think about something that I find happiness in, so it’s the first thing I turn to when I have to deal with something like what’s happening to Mom.”

“Seems completely sane and healthy to me,” I say with a chuckle. “Are you sure you’re actually a March?”

My joke makes him smile, and he reaches over the table to get an egg roll. “Pretty sure, although I still can’t believe how often I get confused with being not Dad’s kid but Stefan’s. Any chance Mom and our uncle had a wild night twenty-four years ago and nobody’s come clean?”

For a long moment, I try to imagine our mother with Stefan. Nope. Doesn’t work. He’s not serious enough for her.

“I’m not seeing that. Now if you said Kane, I’d be able to entertain that idea more, as far as uncles go. But not Stefan.”

“Must just be some kind of super transferable gene thing Grandma, Stefan, Cade, and I have then.”

I nod, trying to think if anyone else in our family has that dark hair and brown eyes thing going on. Oh, yeah. One more. “Don’t forget Ava. She must have gotten that super transferable gene too.”

Alex shakes his head. “Nah, she looks like Shay, though. I think it’s just the three of us. Weird, don’t you think? I mean, Mom’s got brown eyes, but look at you. You’re the spitting image of Dad, and while I look a little like her, I look way more like Stefan and Cade.”

Raising my beer bottle in the air, I make a toast. “Thanks to the amazing and bizarre world of genetics, we all look like either Dad or Stefan. Even the ones who aren’t actually blood related to us.”

After I take a sip of my beer to celebrate that idea that in my quasi-drunken mind sounds pretty damn interesting, I ask, “Wilder get himself straightened out yet, or is he still more
