CHAPTER TEN

‘The Truth Will Always Come Out’

Mihai’s house is beautiful. Wooden panels run along the walls of the corridor, dazzled by the sparkles from the ornate chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling. I run outside to find my bearings and topple into a sprawling garden with a roundabout at the centre, a grey fountain in the middle of it. I turn around and take in the size of the house. If I was walking past a house like this, I would think it belonged to a duke or a lord, or even a member of the royal family.

“Pretty neat, right?” Mihai’s voice sounds from behind me.

My heart pounds in my chest. I haven’t spoken to him since Rosalie caught us kissing last night, and I’ve been doing everything I can to avoid him this morning. I notice, yet again, he sounds like he’s from a different time. Not from the past but from the future. “You speak so differently from most other men I talk to.”

He shrugs. “So do you.”

“Touché.”

I rub my neck where he left a mark from kissing and nibbling on it. “So… last night.”

Instead of saying anything, he walks towards me and stops mere inches in front of me. He takes my hands in his and looks me straight in the eyes. “Raven, I know you must be confused with everything going on, but I need to be honest with you so you know where I stand. Then you can figure out what you want to do. You’re mature.” He pauses for a few seconds. “I know you’ll figure out what you really want.”

I hold my breath because being this close to him makes me want to kiss him, and I need to regain some self-control. “I don’t think I’m mature.”

He sighs. “You’re impossible.”

I shuffle my feet. “I am meant to be with Emmett.” Something gnaws in the pit of my stomach.

He stares at me with a vacant expression. “Oh,” he blurts after a minute. “Right. Is that because you…”

“Love him?”

He nods. “Yes.”

“I do.”

He lets go of my hands. “Of course. It was silly of me to presume you were available after we kissed, a lot, last night.”

I slouch as the shame creeps to the surface. “It’s my fault, Mihai. I led you on. It was wrong. The loneliness got to me.”

“Emmett sacrificed himself for you,” he declares. “There’s no way I can beat that.”

“That’s not why I love him!”

“I know you have feelings for me.” He arches an eyebrow. “No one can fake a kiss that well.”

I lick my lips. The air is so dry today. Or is it my nerves? “I can’t deny that I do have feelings for you.”

He gulps. “This isn’t something I just do. I never let a woman get to me like this, but don’t for a second think you have power over me. I am not Tom. I am not Emmett. I am Mihai, and I don’t let anyone play with my feelings. You tell me right now if you want me, then we can start something.
