Day Four, October 30

Despite the recent shot of life force Kit had given me to heal my lip, the rest of me felt like it had taken a whirl through a blender. I let her drive. Rather than take Beelzie and me back to Calie’s fortress or to my modest office, she took us home with her.

Home wasn’t a hovel in a scrap of forest land; it wasn’t a scraggy little room anywhere near the territory she worked from that convenient corner, either. It was a luxury loft condo. Spacious, airy, tastefully decorated in woodsy tones, and equipped with every electronic device I cared to lust after. The master bedroom was furnished with the sort of sleeping facilities harem-owning sheiks would covet. I collapsed on the bed with a heartfelt sigh. Beelzie scrambled up next to me and nosed his way under the sheets.

“Food,” I said.

Kit picked up the bedside phone and pressed a single button. Bless her, she had pizza delivery on speed dial.

After telling me how much cash I needed to fork over, she asked, “Beer, sake, or tea?”

From beneath the blankets, Beelz barked. I don’t think he was asking for tea. I opted for a beer, and Kit disappeared.

“You want to soak those bruised muscles in a hot tub? You’ve got thirty minutes until the food arrives,” she called back from the kitchen. “If so, towels are on the shelves in the bath.”

Sounded like a heaven-sent idea to me. It got even better when I was submerged in the giant tub and Kit sauntered in, dropping items of her clothing as though she might need to use them as trail markers to find her way back to the bedroom.

I discovered a couple things that night. First, that besides driving a car, I knew how to do something else I’d never done in the Raven books, and based on Kit’s reactions, I did it very well. Second, that sleep was still disgustingly elusive. I looked human, acted fairly human, but I was still just a character on a page. I never got to sleep there, either.

Kit and Beelz didn’t have that problem. While the hellhound dug his way under the pile of fresh towels Kit had tossed on the floor for his nest and she burrowed under the covers on the bed, I slipped away into the other room the moment they were both asleep. There were things to ponder, plan, and ferret out yet.

I now had more information to follow up on in relation to Pavan Banerjee’s murder. When I dropped Kit off in the morning, I’d have assignments to distribute in the neighborhood. As a Native American demon, Doe would have connections with First Nations, but perhaps Kit could talk to Ruth Lund about the spurned girlfriend angle. Since the Botello family should be back from Acapulco and they were human, I wouldn’t need a go-between. To keep up the ruse that I really cared two hoots about finding a writer for Calie, I’d need to touch bases with Delia, too.
