Chapter Nine

Cory squeaked as he was yanked through the double doors then smashed into a wall, Rav’s large body blocking out the light. He started to peek around Rav’s massive form, but the low growl he heard changed his mind. Cory grabbed onto Rav’s shirt and buried his face between the man’s shoulder blades.

“Rav,” Cory murmured. “I want to go home.”

Despite his bravado earlier, he was terrified.

“Quiet, pet.”

Cory tucked in his lips. Dragging his courage up from the depths of his soul, he peeked around Rav. Cory’s eyes rounded until they hurt. They were in some sort of port type of thing except instead of boats or airplanes, there were big metal spaceships docked at the end of several of the concourses.

He tugged on Rav’s shirt until the man glanced back at him. “Are we going on one of those?”

“More than likely.”

“Damn!” Cory swallowed hard as something threatened to try to come up. “I hope I like space travel.” Boats usually made him sick, and forget flying. If god had meant for him to fly, he’d be plucking feathers.

“Cory, you already flew through space, remember?”

Rav was staring down at him like he had lost his mind. Cory shrugged, not wanting to go into all of the things that had happened and why he didn’t want to remember them. “They had me pretty drugged up. I don’t remember much.”

He actually remembered more than he wished he did. He just couldn’t seem to get the horrible images out of his mind. He doubted he ever would.

“Flying through space is pretty incredible, even for someone like me that has done it for so many years.” A small smile curved up one corner of Rav’s mouth. “There is so much I wish to show you, pet. The Saurian asteroid belt. The three moons of Phangar. The vast oceans of Govyrn. There is so much to see.”

“Oh.” Cory blinked rapidly, suspecting he had something in his eyes.

The damn space dock must be dusty.

A whistle killed the special moment between them. Cory had an urge to smack whoever it was until he looked over and realized it was Jeyel, and the man wasn’t alone. He was surrounded by several heavily armed men.

“Rav.” Cory started backing away toward the double doors. When one of the men surrounding Jeyel looked right at him and began to draw his weapon, Cory freaked.

When the menacing blue-skinned stranger took a step toward him, Cory ran. He didn’t even stop when Rav shouted at him. Panic had taken hold of him, and he couldn’t stop his legs from moving. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to. Fear stole his ability to think straight, to reason. It almost stole his ability to breathe.

Cory ran until he found an open doorway. He rushed inside, shutting the door behind him, locking it. His chest rose and fell with his sobs as he turned and surveyed the room, looking for a place to hide.

There was a desk.

It was metal.

It might be big enough.

Cory rushed across the room, dropping to his hands and knees once he got around the desk.
