Chapter 19

The First Decree

"Oh good," I said after the office door had closed and the sound of footfalls down the stairs had fallen away. "I had been wondering if things could get any worse."

Kherliss looked pale. She turned to me. "You and I have had multiple encounters now, Master Arch, so you know that I would engage in your humor given the opportunity. But this is no laughing matter. Lord Edwond is not someone to be taken lightly."

I shook my head to this with a sigh, and she smiled at me. Then she headed for the door, but turned back before exiting. "Oh, just in case, I want to say, I've had a lot of fun and it was very nice knowing you."

"You're even more ominous than Edwond!"

After Kherliss had closed the door behind her, Leise said, "Did you notice…?" The lieutenant's sword hand was trembling. She'd been readying to draw her sword the whole time. "His guards… they were strong... incredibly strong. "

"Hmm..." Elsa crossed her arms and thought about it. "I only have a few impressions."

"Yes?"

"The woman doesn't like working for Edwond, but that isn't to say she wouldn't have killed us in a blink if he'd given the word.
