Chapter 10
I’d been with the mages—the men who saved me—for a few days now, and I would like to think we’d sort of settled into a routine.
The last few mornings, I would wake up in my room and get dressed after taking a long, hot shower. I’d finally gotten one of the men to show me how to work the damnable thing which, by the way, has a voice activated panel hidden in the wall to turn it on or off.
“Turn shower on,” I told the shiny black screen, which lit up with a soft blue light at my command. The water turned on seconds later, the heat preset to my desired temperature. I was beginning to really enjoy this new world I’d woken up in. They made so many things so much easier.
Climbing into the shower, I let out a long moan of pleasure. So much better than freezing cold bird baths. I could live in the shower. I could probably live in the bath as well, but it was much harder to enjoy with so much hair filling the tub. It was on my agenda today to make sure I find someone to cut the lot of it off for me.
Lathering up the body wash, or so I’d been told it was called, onto a nearby sponge, I scrubbed my skin until it was pink and clean. My hair came next, which was a daunting task that I hoped soon to be done with. Perhaps I’ll cut it as short as one of the men’s. Then it would take no time at all to wash my hair.
I sighed at the thought, my own daydreams and the water keeping me from hearing the knock on the bathroom door until it opened. A head of bloodred hair peeked into the crack of the bathroom door and I let out a tiny shriek before my foot slipped out from under me and I came tumbling down inside the shower. With glass walls, there was nothing to hold on to on the way down and I ended up in a crumpled heap on the floor.
“Eva!” Zane cried out, hurrying to my side. If I wasn’t in so much pain, I’d find the fact that he was trying to help me at the same time as he was trying to keep his eyes on the ceiling a counterintuitive action. “Are you okay?” He cleared his throat several times, his cheeks turning red as he held a towel out to me.
I groaned and pushed myself up. “Yes, just a bit bruised. You startled me.”
“My apologizes. I knocked, but no one answered. I feared you might have…” Zane shook his head with an embarrassed twitch of his lips. “Never mind. I’m glad you are okay.”
Wrapping the towel around myself, I waited until Zane moved before climbing out of the bath/shower. “What did you want?” I paused when I realized I sounded a bit rude and amended it. “I mean, were you looking for me for
