There was an expectant look on Mandy Rawlings’ face as she swung open the door, hoping to see that her son was being returned. The light disappeared from her eyes when she saw Ben standing alone in the hallway.

“We’re still looking,” he said. “We’re going to find him.”

“I’m sorry for making you stand there. Come in,” she said. “I heard there was some shooting downtown. You okay?”

“Just some drunk blowing off steam.”

He held the envelope out to her. “I was asked to deliver this from John. Like I’ve mentioned before, he’s been told that you can’t know where he is, but I can assure you he’s safe and doing well.”

She walked to the sofa and sat, her hands trembling as she opened the letter.

“I’ll leave you to it,” Dalton said, suddenly feeling he was intruding.

“No,” she said, “stay for a bit. Just let me read this, and then I’d like to talk for a while.”

She immediately recognized her husband’s handwriting and put one hand to her mouth, muffling a sob as she read:

My Dearest Mandy,

There are no words to express how much I miss you and little Alton, so I’ll just use this letter to tell you I am feeling fine and hope to be home very soon. For your safety, I can’t tell you where I am, but know it is quiet and peaceful here. It would be wonderful if you could be here with me.

Hiding out like this makes me feel like a criminal at times, but I assure you I’m not. I am innocent of what happened to Thomas Cookson.

If you see Ben, please tell him how much I appreciate everything he has done. He’s a good man and will help you with anything you need in my absence. You only have to ask. He is the best friend I’ve ever had and I credit him with saving my life.

There were a lot of things I wanted to say when I sat down to write this, but now the only thing that is really important is that you know I love you very much.

Your husband, John

P.S.—To pass the time I have been doing a lot of reading. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a very interesting book. I suggest the next time you visit the library you borrow it. You might also recommend it to Ben and my old friend Shelby Profer.
