CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Kyle paced back and forth in his living room, trying his best to talk himself out of opening the bottle of wine he had in the kitchen. He knew that drinking wouldn’t help solve his problems, but he was coming close to releasing some stress by taking a quick sip. His mind raced with thoughts of Brad and Rachel; wondering what they had done since he left their house the previous day.

A full twenty-four hours had gone by, and he hadn’t heard from either of them. He was beginning to realize that he had ruined his chances of a relationship with Brad by keeping something important from him. He wished that he had confided in Brad and told him everything that was happening, but he knew it was too late for that.

Walking into the kitchen, he pulled out his bottle opener and popped the bottle of wine. Pouring some of it into a glass, he watched as the smooth red elixir seeped into its container. He stood silently, enjoying the scent of it as it filled the room, wondering if he was doomed to spend the rest of his life in a lonely house with only wine to keep him company.

One glass won’t hurt, he assured himself as he lifted it to his lips.

He stopped himself before placing the glass back on the table again. He had just spent an entire day lecturing Rachel about drinking too much, yet there he was rejecting his own advice. He wanted to toss the wine in the sink and call Brad, but he didn’t think it would help. Finally, he decided to give into temptation and just have one glass. He picked it up, placed it against his lips, and lifted it into the air.

Before he could take a sip, he heard a gentle tapping at the door. He placed the glass on the counter and made his way through the living room toward the front door. Surprisingly, it was Rachel standing on the other side. Kyle pulled the door open and greeted her with a hug.

“What are you doing here?” he asked. “Does Brad know you’re here?”

“No,” she replied with a sigh. “I think he’d be angry if he knew.”

“Do you want to come in?” Kyle asked gesturing toward the living room.

She smiled, nodded her head, and followed him into his home. Glancing at the coffee table, Kyle realized that he had actually placed his wine glass there, not in the kitchen like he originally remembered.

“Having a drink?” she asked, attempting to make a joke.

Kyle was grateful for the effort, but embarrassed to be caught drinking in the middle of the afternoon.

“Not quite,” he said. “I mean, I haven’t had any yet.”

“It’s fine,” she said with a smile.

She sat on the couch and he followed suit by sitting across from her in his recliner.

“Is everything okay?” he asked. “This is a surprise.”

She shook her head and answered, “Things aren’t good at home. My conversations with my uncle have been strained, and I need some help.
