Chapter 10 – Ki’Lon

She’s beautiful.

The human female was as lovely as the violet sky of my home planet of Vindar, hovering above the setting of its dual suns as brilliant rays of amber, turquoise, and red stretched their fingers along the horizon. She was multifaceted and as precious as rare jewel. I was already smitten in just a few minutes of brief conversation.

Something about Mia tugged on my soul.

“She is my mate.”

The gruff words snatched my attention as my head turned to the massive beast lounging on the bed in his cell next to my own.

“I heard. Your Sol’nay.”

His brow lifted. “You have heard of the Drovek.”

“Yes. I am Braxthar. We know of all 51 species in the Conclave and even more who have not been invited. Even those under the Cardinal Edict are located in our database.”

“Braxthar,” he snorted. “You think you are above all species. I am Xav. A warrior class like your own.”

I shrugged, not admitting my royal status. “We are an advanced society. Our pride is justified.”

“Spoken like a diplomat.” The beast ticked his chin toward the human female. “Mia is special, and she is mine. We need to reach an understanding.”

“I am intrigued by her, attracted to her beauty. What male could resist?”

“None, but that is irrelevant. She is my mate.”

“That doesn’t mean you have exclusive claim. I would say the female gets to decide who she wants and when. Her choice has been ripped from her since the moment of her arrival. Maybe longer.” He opened his mouth to argue but I didn’t give him a chance. “Did you know she was born on Cryton? The offspring of a mother taken from Earth and sold into sexual slavery. Mia has known hardship her entire life.”

“What do you care?” Xav’s anger proved he didn’t know all that I shared. “She is still mine.”

“Possibly,” I conceded, “but not entirely yours. Not yet. Mia will decide.”

His growl rattled the clear barrier that separated us from one another. “I will not discuss this further.”

“Because you don’t wish to be wrong.”

He snarled, sharp incisors gleaming in the light. “Because I do not wish to rip you apart the moment that I am able.”

“Fair enough.” A light chuckle escaped my lips. “Your protection of her is admirable. She needs a champion.”

“Yes.”

“I will also protect the human, but we must have a plan. Things will stay this easy for long. I sense great deception among the Critecks.”

“What do you mean?”

“The crimes they are committing are not sanctioned by the Conclave or known to the Galactic Assembly. Even if they are listening now, I share nothing that isn’t already known to them. Every day that they persist in these experiments increases the odds of discovery. When inmates are released –”

“The Critecks don’t release inmates.”

“What!?”

His grim smile proved he was as disturbed as much as I was. “They will never allow a single inmate to escape. Their secrets are closely guarded. What you say is no threat. The Critecks must believe they are invincible.
