In all cases of ARS, medical treatment involves treating the symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and shock, as well as dealing with or preventing infections. Vomiting and diarrhea are treated with antiemetic and antidiarrheal drugs. Broad spectrum antibiotics (which are effective against a wide range of bacteria) are used to prevent and treat infections. If necessary, antiviral and antifungal drugs are a part of protecting the victim from infection, too. Medicines to reduce fevers are commonly prescribed. Shock is a whole-body response to trauma in which the cells do not get enough oxygen or nutrients. Shock can occur when there are not enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to body cells, when dehydration reduces the plasma (or blood fluid) in the blood vessels, or when blood vessels themselves become weak and leak fluid from sepsis, which means nutrients carried in the bloodstream cannot reach body cells. If allowed to continue, shock can quickly lead to organ failure and death. If a victim of ARS is at risk of shock, doctors treat with oxygen, medicines to raise blood pressure (to get more blood to body tissues), and blood transfusions if hemorrhage is suspected.
