Dolphin Rua da Dalheta 14A 282 789 992. This upmarket restaurant in the attractive west edge of town serves unusual dishes with a South African twist: ostrich steak piri-piri, vegetable bobotie (with rice, soya and sultanas) and couscous, at €13–20. Mon–Sat 6.30–10pm.

Fortaleza da Luz Av das Pescadores 3 282 789 926. Above the west end of the beach, you can dine in style in a seventeenth-century former sea fort with a lovely sea-facing terrace. Organic vegetables and home-made ice creams complement a choice of Algarvian and international cuisine: burgers, pasta, mussel and pork cataplana stew (€9–18). There’s live music on Thursdays and jazz on Sunday afternoon. Daily 11am–11pm.
