Alex Stajkovic, of the University of Wisconsin, relates an experiment. He explains that a sales company CEO would send out a motivational email every Monday to his employees; it was a way of creating confidence in the workforce and setting the weekly targets. In the experiment, half the employees received a slightly different email—twelve achievement related words were inserted into the email. These boosted emails were randomly assigned, and the control group got the email without the achievement words. The words were simply words like win, compete, accomplish, etc. The purpose of the experiment was to see the impact that these words would have on the results of those employees. Just five days later (actually it varied one day to five days), those who read the 12 words performed significantly better than those who didn’t. The goal priming by the CEO had little or no impact on cost, yet it increased objectively measured performance effectiveness by fifteen percent and efficiency by thirty-five percent over a five-day workweek. The individuals were totally unaware of what was happening—the goal to achieve had been set in their subconscious.24 “Goal priming” such as this has been done with pictures, words, and even complex marketing campaigns to test if this subconscious incentive really does work. Each and every time, even the skeptics agreed that goal priming is effective.
