CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“They must have found a way to get into the program,” said Charlotte. Timber was seated between them, his big head in her lap.

“I don’t know,” said Remy. “All they said was that we should meet them out at the Sugar Lodge.”

He looked behind him, seeing the half a dozen other ATVs following him. His gut sank, worried that this wasn’t just something simple. He pulled under the overhang, grabbing Charlotte’s hand. The rest of the men followed, their somber faces telling him that he needed to be prepared for what was inside.

Opening the door, he saw a woman seated in a chair that he didn’t recognize. Her long silver hair fell over her shoulders, but it was the eyes that gave her away immediately. He held tighter to Charlotte, pulling her behind him. Timber sensed his anxiety and sat in front of Charlotte.

At first, she didn’t see her. She looked up at Remy, tilting her head, wondering why he was being so protective. Then she followed his eyes, seeing the woman. Walking slowly toward her, she swallowed, her body shaking from disbelief.

“It can’t be,” she whispered.

“Charlotte,” she cried, “oh, God, Charlotte.”

“Mom? How? How are you here?” She stopped, just staring at the woman.

“It’s a long story, baby. I’m so sorry, so very sorry.” She opened her arms, and Charlotte just stared at her. Taking one more step, she was close enough to touch the other woman. They expected a lot of things from Charlotte. Tears, happiness, hugs. What they never expected was the slap she gave her mother, sending her to the floor.

“How dare you? How dare you suddenly appear after I was kept chained for more than a decade. You coward. You fucking coward!” she yelled. Remy grabbed her shoulders, pulling her back as Timber growled at the older woman.

“Honey, wait. Hear her out,” he said calmly.

Michael kneeled beside Miriam, gently helping her to her feet. She had tears rolling down her cheeks, but she held her emotions together.

“You have a right to be angry with me, but I didn’t know that you were still alive. As I’ve explained to your platoon of bodyguards, I thought Wayne had taken you somewhere to keep you safe. When Hayden announced to the world that you were taken, I just knew that he’d killed you or was trying to draw me out. When I saw the story of the yacht sinking, something told me that you were still alive.”

“Something told you? You mean like maybe maternal instinct? You left me with your bodyguard. The man you’d been fucking!” she yelled. Remy’s eyes grew wide, hearing Charlotte suddenly angry. “I’m not saying he didn’t take care of me, but it wasn’t his job. You knew that Dad would come for him, and he did. That’s when my hell truly began.”

“I’ve lived that hell, too, Charlotte.”

“You lived it for eight years. I lived it for fourteen. Fourteen fucking years! I was starved, beaten, abused, chained like a dog, all because of your damn codes and secrets.
