Chapter 8

Izzie woke from her nap, hearing murmurings behind her. She lay still, listening to Ryland and Quinn as they discussed the case and what to do.

“It still would be best if she was back at the compound.”

She winced at that because she understood that she was causing them more trouble by being obstinate about it. She really wanted to go back to the compound, but she wanted Bullard to be there at the same time. That was just foolish because she would have to face his loss at some point in time. It just seemed like she’d lost so much in her life already that she just couldn’t acknowledge this one. The loss of Bullard was asking too much. She lay here for a long moment and then finally sat up, didn’t say anything to the men, but went into the bathroom, where she washed her face, before finally stepping back out. She looked over at them, smiled, and said, “Yes, I feel better.”

She could see the relief on Quinn’s face. She looked at him with such mixed reactions these days. It’s like he’d become attached to her; he was never far away, and, when he was, she just felt lost. She swore she would never get attached to anybody again; it looked like she’d already lost that battle, and it just changed everything in her world. She walked over and sat down on the couch beside them. Immediately Quinn opened his arms, tucked her up against his chest. Ryland didn’t show any surprise at the maneuver, so either they’d already discussed it or he seemed to think it was the right thing to do. She was too tired to even worry about it, and maybe she didn’t need to analyze everything. “Is there any coffee?”

“I can go get some,” Ryland said, hopping to his feet.

“Is there room service or is that something well above …”

“Not at this level. We didn’t want to get you booked into a highly visible hotel chain,” Quinn said apologetically. “Didn’t want to attract any attention.”

She nodded. “That makes sense.” She yawned again though.

Ryland smiled. “I’m meeting Kano in a few minutes.” He added, “We’ll both come back here and bring you some coffee.”

“Where are you meeting him?” she asked.

“A couple blocks from here. We’ll do a sweep and see what cameras are around the area and if we can hitch up something ourselves for extra surveillance.”

“I think the city might have something to say about that,” she muttered.

“We won’t ask,” he said cheerfully. He winked at her and said, “Back soon with coffee.” And he disappeared.

She smiled and snuggled closer into Quinn’s arms.

He whispered against her ear, “Are you really feeling better?”

“I am,” she said. “Sorry for being such a bear earlier.”

“You had a right to,” he said comfortably.

“It’s just been a really rough couple years.”

“In many ways for a lot of us,” he muttered.

“This Bullard thing’s got all of us down, and I’m sure you’re expending every ounce of energy you can to make it all … to make sure that we find him,” she said.
