Chapter Seventeen

“YOU want me to bathe you before I go?” Lorcan asked Jess as he

finished pulling on his boots.

“No.”

Jess had been steadily getting better over the last three weeks, and

Lorcan was comfortable enough with his progress to start leaving him

during the day to run their ranch. Collin still came by a couple of days a

week to help with the heavier stuff, but for the most part, Lorcan

enjoyed the time alone. Working his muscles, breathing air that wasn"t

infused with antiseptics, and feeling like he was accomplishing

something had gone a long way to help him keep sane. The placidity

the ranch offered helped him immensely in dealing with Jess"s new

shitty attitude.

Jess had been moved to a large room that could accommodate a

cot for Lorcan, so Lorcan spent his nights with Jess and his days on the

ranch. His newfound freedom may have been a godsend for him, one

he couldn"t afford to give up, but it came with a heavy price. Since he"d

started leaving during the day, Jess"s normally pleasant demeanor had

deteriorated steadily into a nearly constant state of irritation, and

Lorcan"s guilt was increasing in spades. He was trying to be patient and

understanding. Jess still didn"t have any feeling in his legs. His toes

were a nice healthy pink color sticking out from the body cast, which

the doctors assured them was a good sign that blood flow had not been

compromised and there was no danger of Jess losing either of his legs.

There hadn"t been any fractures in Jess"s spine, and his spinal cord

appeared to be intact. There was some swelling and bruising around his

lumbar spine, which was the likely cause of the paralysis. Dr. Hobbs

was optimistic that as the swelling decreased and with rehabilitation,
