“Whatcha readin’?”

“Proust.”

“You’re kiddin’, right?”

“No. Go away.”

“Put that down, right this instant. You can’t read that French shit on Memorial Day weekend.”

“It’s translated into English, Tony.”

Tony’s brow wrinkles and he towers over Julian, hands on his hips.

Suddenly Tony reaches down, loops one arm behind Julian’s back and one arm under his knees, and picks him up off the ground. He carries Julian briskly down the slope, down the length of the wooden dock, and tosses him and his book into the water.

“You’re dead, Tony!” Julian shouts as he hits the water. As his head goes underwater, Julian hears the cheers and whistles of his friends and Beau barking madly behind him.
