On the morning of my wedding day, I strapped a knife to my thigh with white ribbon while I propped my foot on the bed.
That was how Melchior found me, my entire leg exposed, tying a bow. His eyes widened as his gaze traveled along my bare skin to the tip of my satin shoes. âMay I ask what you are doing?â
âIn case I have to kill anyone, I want to be prepared.â I knotted it tightly around the top of my thigh.
I let the fabric of the gown fall back in place.
âYouâre in blue. On our wedding day.â
âAm I only allowed black? I thought it would be nice to wear something different.â Ilya had chosen light blue. Not white nor black, not silver nor gold â sky blue. She told me that even if my marriage to Melchior was a farce, there was no reason to not look like a queen. Reluctantly, Iâd agreed, then let her handle everything.
The seamstress had outdone herself, crafting the loveliest gown Iâd ever laid eyes on. Ethereal, floating, blue chiffon fluttered down to the floor, with a train that stretched behind me. Small diamonds crusted the bodice and hem. Tiny sleeves drifted off my shoulders, and the neckline plunged between my breasts, forming the shape of a heart.
It was exquisite, feminine. Worthy of Hemera, Goddess of the Dawn.
Undeniably, it was the most beautiful thing Iâd ever worn.
Sheâd selected sapphire teardrops for my ears, ones that shone with fire every time I turned my head, and my golden hair was studded with tiny diamond pins, each shaped like a small star.
Melchior seemed temporarily at a loss for words.
âWhich crown should I wear?â I studied the dresser, which now had two rows of glittering headpieces.
âWhichever. Every crown has its own weight.â
I trailed my finger over the edges of a silver one topped with amethysts. It was lovely, but wouldnât match the gown.
âExcited to be a princess?â
âProbably as excited as you are to be my prince.â
He studied the sky-blue gown again, holding his tongue.
The clock struck five. Our wedding was in the great hall. Weâd have to be going soon. But it felt like my feet were glued in place.
The winter sun streamed in, waning as night approached. The smell of evergreen and firerose filled the air. Grace chapel was full of guests, all of whom watched me. I squirmed uncomfortably and wished it was already over.
The invitees were citizens, royalty, merchants, and advisors to Atropos. In this room, I had no friends, no parents, no family, and no title. Everyone was a stranger. I felt their judging eyes upon me, feasting like vultures on my unease. I hid my calloused hands behind my back and lifted my chin.
Ten thousand gold coins.
An unimaginable sum, but was it worth my soul? Was it worth it? I'd gone from stealing a mask to marrying a man I barely knew. He'd saved my life, so now I owed it to him⦠but was he worth dying for?
Feeling panicked, I scanned the crowd.
