Aria
Aria pinned Ryke against the wall of the tavern, holding her knife to his throat. Jack touched her shoulder, but she didnât loosen her grip.
âAnd what makes you think Iâll help you after you double crossed me?â Ryke asked. There was no fear in his eyes when he met Ariaâs scowl.
âJust answer the question,â she hissed, pressing the blade to his scruffy skin. âWho are those pirates, and where would they take a mermaid?â
Ryke arched a brow. âSince when do you care what happens to a mermaid?â By the disdain in his tone, he didnât like them either. At least they had that in common.
âI donât,â Aria snapped. âShe took something of mine, and I want it back.â
âAnd whatâs in it for me?â Ryke flashed a smug smile, and Aria growled.
âHow about you get to live?â She pressed the blade to his neck again.
âAll right, enough.â Jack pulled Aria off of Ryke and watched as he rubbed his neck. âTell us what you know.â
Ryke looked from Aria to Jack. âFine, but Iâll need something in return.â
âPlease, let me cut his tongue out,â Aria muttered to Jack, but he raised a hand.
âWhat do you want?â
Ryke turned to Jack, and Aria felt an uneasiness in the pit of her stomach.
âAfter we save your precious mermaid, you come with me.â
âAbsolutely not,â Aria barked. And how many times did she have to say she couldnât care less about saving the mermaid?
âWhere will you take me?â Jack asked.
âNot where, mate.â Ryke smoothed his shirt. âTo whom.â
Aria didnât like the curiosity in Jackâs eyes. âYou canât trust him,â she whispered.
âHe knew I was coming through the portal,â Jack reminded her. âSo, whoever this person is, they may know why Iâm here.â
Aria opened her mouth to protest, but there was nothing she could say to change his mind. Especially when he was determined to get answers. And to be fair, he deserved them. Heâd done so much to help her.
âFineâ¦â she grumbled, and Jackâs face lit up.
He turned to Ryke with renewed enthusiasm. âSeems like you got yourself a deal⦠mate.â Jack offered his hand, but Ryke didnât bother taking it.
âYou donât get to say mate, mate.â
Jackâs smile fell, and Aria wanted to slap Ryke for being a jerk. âSo, where do we go from here?â Aria asked, putting her knife away.
âWhere do you think?â Ryke cocked his head smugly. âThe Dark Howler.â
