Twenty-Two

Ivy paced before the window in her chamber. She was exhausted from the day’s battle, troubled by the lives lost, and torn about the new complications in Jules’ sire bond. What was she going to do? Teagan, if they could even find her, was allied with Fhaescratch in a war against them. And Slaine would never agree to be a living bloodbag for Jules, especially now that Ivy had gloated about her impending execution.

Proud people breed sad sorrows for themselves.

It was one of Nan’s favorite quotes from Emily Brontë, and nothing could be truer of Ivy’s situation in that moment. She should never have visited the tower. She should never have stood face to face with Slaine, allowing grief and anger to overwhelm her. The truth was, Ivy couldn’t wait to tell Slaine the news. She had been so focused on avenging Ardan that she had lost sight of herself for a moment. Now, she realized, all she had managed to do was stoke a fire already blazing.

“Stupid,” Ivy whispered to herself. “How could you be so stupid?”

She fell back onto the soft bed and groaned. She was fairly confident she could secure agreements from Damarion and Queen Fiona, and perhaps through Bear, Spring. But how would she ever break the news to Bear that he wasn’t the true heir of Seelie? Ivy rubbed her face with her hands, fisting her tired eyes. She had already offered Jules her vein before everyone left, but Jules had refused to drink from Ivy until she had rested, hydrated, and eaten. She’d be back the following morning, expecting the circles to have disappeared from beneath Ivy’s eyes. At the rate she was going, Jules was sure to be disappointed. Now that Ivy was alone, she was more wired than ever. There was no way she could sleep with so much on her mind.

To her left, the door creaked open, and Madra came bustling in from the Brownie’s entrance.

“I beg your pardon, Majesty, but I’ve just received an urgent message from young Bear. He says it’s for your eyes only and I’m to wait for further instructions.”

Ivy bolted off the bed and took the crinkled parchment Madra held. Hastily, she unfolded the letter and read. Bear was waiting in the portal room and needed to meet with her privately.

After her last encounter with Bear, whatever issue he faced now must have been dire. He never would call upon her for help after hurling accusations at her unless he was desperate.

“Madra, go to him at once and bring him to my room,” Ivy ordered. “Make sure the hallways are empty and that not a soul sees you. Use the Brownies’ halls and take him the back way.”

“Right away, Your Majesty.” Madra dipped into a quick curtsy and bolted out the door.

Ivy dashed across the room and grabbed her robe, flinging it over her silk pajamas for added modesty. If anyone were to come in and find them together, she would need to be seen fully clad and in complete control of herself.
