More wood was heaped on the fires. Those that had remained behind at the camp whilst Kasnata had led a small contingent to battle had employed their time by preparing for the evening, for the celebration of a victory that was to be won.
Foraging parties had been dispatched to gather five times the amount of wood, three times the amount of water, and six times the amount of meat that the camp would need on any other night.
It wasnât arrogance or certainty of victory that made those of the Order who had not ridden to battle go to such extravagant lengths, but rather a hope that it would be a celebration; not a funeral procession that returned to camp.
No words had been spoken regarding the skirmish since the contingent of warriors had left first left camp. No worries were shared, no doubt was allowed to linger. The men of Nosfa had spoken of nothing else. The small number of veterans amongst the soldiers told tales of past battles, of friends they had lost, of loved ones left behind. Some wished their comrades would not return; the commanders Mercia had placed to report back to him upon General Birdâs death were amongst those wishing death upon their countrymen.
The soldiers thought the warriors cold and unfeeling for ignoring the battle being fought. The warriors felt the soldiers callous and cruel to wish to live in the pain of others whilst men and women were dying on the battlefield. It was this that caused tension to fall in the camp.
Shaul and Methanlan had not left the soldiers of Nosfa known as Jack and Harry since their first meeting. Their orders had been to remain with them until Kasnata wished to see them. Shaul had sat and listened by the fireside, saying nothing during the discussions of past battles. Harry had reminisced with Methanlan about the past battles they had shared, listing names of faces they had never seen again.
Shaul could see the comfort the men around him took in the stories, that their names would not be forgotten by their friends if they did fall to the enemy. But the Queterian could not shake the feeling that the men sitting around waiting whilst there was work to be done was disrespectful to those that fought. That their brothers-in-arms would return, exhausted from battle, and yet have work to do before they could rest.
His mind wandered to thoughts of those he served with in the Order of the Bear, to General Shamgar. The tiny man that was more ferocious than a man of twice his size. He carried a claymore that in the hands of any other man his size would have been comical.
Shaul smiled in spite of himself at the memory of the first time he had met the general. It had been a few years ago, the new recruits had lined up for inspection after they had completed the training to join the Order of the Bear. Only the legend of Shamgar
