Chapter Ten—Sofi

The night settled around us like a shroud, the desert's solitude was so profound it felt almost sentient. The silence was punctuated by the disquieting chirps and hoots of unseen nocturnal creatures, and the eerie rustle of wind, carrying the ghosts of a thousand years over the sandy dunes. Our evening was consumed in a feverish search for the elusive fragments of the mummy, an undertaking that felt like a dance with shadows, as our strained eyes were fooled time and again by the capricious moonlight.

As fatigue gnawed at our resolve, we were forced to concede to the relentless passage of time. Not from a lack of will, but because our bodies were staging a silent rebellion against the unforgiving strain.

It was then that Conner, Bruce to those who knew his public persona, took it upon himself to try and infiltrate my sanctuary once more. "Sofi," he began, his voice smooth as polished stone, practiced in the art of persuasion. "Consider the sheer scale of possibilities..."

His proposal rang hollow, a dissonant echo in the quiet symphony of the desert night. I curtly cut him off, "Bruce! You’re in the way here! I never asked you to come! That was Fatima’s idea, wasn’t it?”

He didn’t answer but continued to pitch his idea. “I can make one phone call, Sofi and it will change your life forever. This find of yours is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! It’s bigger than you and your ego!”

“My ego? You want to talk about ego?”

“Yeah, let’s talk about it! Like the time in Morocco. Have you forgotten about that? I haven’t. I’m sure the Moroccan government hasn’t either!”

“You would bring that up. You were with me, idiot! You wanted to go into that chamber as much as I did. If I remember correctly, you dared me to breach it!” I raised my finger at him and stomped my booted foot angrily. Why did Bruce always bring the worst out in me? Always.

“I never told you to breach it, Sofi. That was all you!”

Before I could think of a good comeback, Ahmed and Leila joined us and stood stock still like two deer caught in headlights. Leila raised her hands as if to say she surrendered. She walked out but Ahmed stayed and I was glad for it. I finally collected myself enough to send Bruce packing.

“You call anyone and I’ll have you thrown off the site. I appreciate all that you’ve done to help us get here but you’re not helping now. I think you should go, Professor Conner. Please.”

He stood, thunderstruck, before spinning around and melting into the obsidian expanse beyond the tent. His departure brought a palpable easing of tension, a blessed silence in which the desert night once again cradled us in its hushed embrace.

Ahmed and I exchanged glances and to my surprise, he laughed. I did too. I needed that. And I needed to remember that I was still the boss, even if one of my mummies had been stolen.

Now I could finally attend to the fascinating enigma that lay in wait – the ancient clay tablets.
