Senator Kurtz climbed down out of the helicopter and into the blazing afternoon sunshine. Ducking under the din of the rotor blades, he strode across the small helipad and onto the enormous lawn of the headquarters of the Church of the Revealed Truth.

As the helicopter lifted off again, the senator could not stop himself from smiling. There was barely a cloud in the sky, the air was fresh and clear and this was his favourite place on earth. What a release it was to be away from the hustle of Washington DC and the pressures of his work at the Corporation. But it would all be worth it: very soon now the prophecies of the Book of Revelations would be fulfilled and he would be among the few souls carried aloft to escape the torment that would be inflicted on the rest of humanity . . .

One hundred and fifty yards away the brand-new buildings of the Church of the Revealed Truth rose up in splendour, their windows glinting in the sunlight. As the senator crossed the lawn, he tried to stifle a sense of pride. He could take a large part of the credit for increasing the Church revenues these last few years to the hundreds of millions of dollars a year they were today.

The television studio in the centre of the complex was the beating heart of the Church. It was shaped like a Greek amphitheatre with a horseshoe of seats rising up on all sides and a central podium where the preacher could stand, heightening the intensity and atmosphere of the occasion. The passionate services were broadcast across the nation, donations were requested and miraculous stories of how the Church had changed people’s lives told first hand by ecstatic audience members.
