I wish I'd known her, Ben said to himself, as he closed his bedroom door. She had guts. She had human nature pegged. She looked at everything she'd been given, and tried to do it right.

There was a knock on the library door half an hour later. And Ben called to whoever it was to come in.

Jack Corelli closed the high white door behind him, then stood by the cinnamon wall as though he didn't know what to say. “I've been looking all over for you.”

“Oh?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“Sit down. Please. Has it started raining?”

“Yeah. Wind's blowing hard toward the coast.”

Ben tossed two more logs on the fire, then sat back down in the wing chair on the left of the fireplace. He set a leather-bound book on a side table, just as Jack threw himself on the sofa that faced the fireplace.

“I'd like to ask a favor.”

“What?”

“Don't tell anybody I'm a microbiologist.” Jack had been carrying his leather motorcycle jacket and he dropped it then on the rug.

“I may have to tell Ellen.”

“Why?”

“You live here. You work for her. I think she has a right to know. Why does it matter so much to you?”

“I don't like everybody knowing my business.” Jack smoothed his Levi's and then stretched his legs out, setting one heavy motorcycle boot across the other.

Ben leaned back in his chair and locked his hands behind his head while he gazed noncommittally at Jack.

“I don't want to be treated a certain way because of what I do. I'm the same person whether I do science or hammer nails.”

“Right. I agree.”

“I want out of academia.”

“I can understand that. I hate academic politicking, almost as much as I hate the arrogance, which means I want to run away a lot of the time too.” Ben laughed.

But Jack didn't look amused. Especially his eyes, behind long black lashes. Hard. Dark. Very self-protective. “I'm not running away. I just don't want to be admired or ignored because of what I do.” Jack said it fast and low with rising irritation.

“I know what you mean. I feel the same way.”

“There's something I should tell you about Georgina.”

“That you were with her the night before she died?”

“Yeah. So you found the plan for the falconry center?”

“It was in the purse she took with her the night before she died. Undated and unmailed, apparently. There was no envelope in her things, at least. Though that's obviously not conclusive. Mrs. Long identified the purse.”

“We went out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant, and stopped at The Bird and Baby for a drink.”

“The Eagle and Child?”

“Yeah. Anyway, I had nothin' to do with her death.”

“Why would I think you did?”

“Let's not beat around the bush, okay? I was with her. I'm a microbiologist. I could be said to know something about pathogens that attack the gut, even if that wasn't my area.” Jack was leaning
