Recognize Jesus’ Definition of Leadership

Jesus gave his disciples an image of leadership that should be our standard for student leadership. Matthew 20:25–28 says that Jesus called his disciples together and said to them, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Not only did Jesus shatter another pharisaical paradigm, he also gave a prescription for greatness: Be a leader who serves.

Servant leadership is not attractive to most students; it opposes the impulse to race for the front seat of the car or to be first in line to eat. If your present student leadership is unhealthy, you may need to “close shop” for a few months. Explain to your students that you are trying to make some healthy changes and that you will restart with a new look. Then try to implement the following ideas.

Not only did Jesus shatter another pharisaical paradigm, he also gave a prescription for greatness: Be a leader who serves.
