Emmett and Snow thanked the villagers for their hospitality and followed the map drawn out for them to find Jack’s village. The weather was more pleasant, and a few birds chirped as they flew over their heads.

Snow stumbled on some loose gravel, and Emmett found her hand as quick as a Venus flytrap. Snow blushed, and when Emmett didn’t let go as they continued to walk, she was startled at how natural it was to hold his hand.

They finally reached another hilltop, and the sound of wind instruments floated up to them. There was snow on the ground once more and a different kind of chill in the air. As they drew closer to a settlement, Snow’s gaze landed on a group of men sitting around a fire while the women sat in a huddle, washing clothes in a spring of steaming water.

Snow scanned the pale faces of the people, dressed in fine silks. This tribe looked starkly different from the one they had encountered the night before. Each person had silver-white hair just like Jack.

As they approached, a young man turned, and his glacier eyes bore into her. It took her brain a few beats to process who was standing there. He was strong, and healthy, and stood with an authority and a presence that made her feel small. But there was no mistaking him.

“Jack!” She broke from Emmett’s hand and ran into Jack’s outstretched arms. He held her tenderly as a bubble of emotion rose to the base of her throat, making it hard to swallow.

Flashes of dark memories took hold of her mind, and Jack cradled her like a big brother soothing his little sister.

“What brings you all this way?” he asked when they broke apart. His gaze landed on Emmett, who had caught up. “I see you’ve found your prince charming.”

Snow gave Jack a quizzical look. “What?”

Jack’s face broke into an amused smile, then he shook his head. “Never mind.”

Emmett held out his hand. “I’m Emmett, not a prince but a hunter.” They shook hands and Jack’s face turned to mild surprise.

“So… Snow White and the huntsman. Now, that’s an interesting twist.”

Snow and Emmett exchanged looks, then she gave him a bashful smile. She had not warned him that sometimes Jack spoke in cryptic ways.

“Did you find what you were looking for?” Snow asked him. She knew he’d come searching for his ancestors. Peering over his shoulder at the people at the camp, Snow figured he did. But Jack looked down, his expression growing dark.

“Yes. I’ve discovered who I was meant to become. I always thought Jack Frost was just a legend, though I suppose after discovering that fairy tales are real, I shouldn’t have been surprised. Nevertheless, I could never imagine I could belong to this world.” He rubbed his chin, looking at the ground, and snowflakes fell in the space between them. “There is still so much to learn. It could take a lifetime.”

Snow wrung her hands. “Jack. We need you home.”

She looked imploringly at his eyes, but Jack gestured to the camp behind him.
