Chapter Ten

I shut the door, leaving Marigold asleep. I've already sent a maid to find the others and ask them to meet me in Rapunzel's rooms. We'll need all the help we can get if we're going to help her get out of whatever mess her prophecy has got her in.

"How is she?" Florian asks from his post by the door. I can't believe he's spent all that time standing guard. He could get into trouble for skipping his class.

"Sleeping," I respond. "Other than that, it's hard to tell. She barely made any noise while I was dealing with her." And it worries me, but I know with the others helping, we should be able to do something.

"What happened?"

I shrug. "All I know is that she thinks she's been tricked into her prophecy. That's all she said before you joined us. We're going to have to wait until she wakes up to find out more." I don't think I should be telling him this, but after helping us, he's kind of involved and has a right to know.

"I hope she's mistaken."

"Me too. Prophecies are never good." Though they haven't exactly ended badly for any of my friends so far. It doesn't mean Marigold's will go the same way. Or even mine. I don't like thinking about it because of what it will mean for the rest of my life, but I have to face the facts. I may be doomed.

"Is there anything else I can do to help?" he asks. "I can run down to the kitchens and get some food or tea, if that helps?"

I shake my head, and reach out to place a hand on his arm.

Both of us glance down at where I'm touching him, then back up to meet one another's eyes. Something passes between us, but I'm not sure what to call it. Other than a good feeling. This afternoon has only gone further towards me understanding that Florian is one of the good ones. He'll do anything to help someone else, I realise that now.

"Thank you for everything." I mean every word. "I'll make sure Marigold knows you helped when she wakes up."

"There's no need," he assures me. "She'll probably hate the idea of anyone but her closest friends seeing her like that," he observes.

That's astute. And a completely accurate picture of how Marigold is.

"Are you sure? Her family is insanely rich. Helping her might be good financially." I wince, even as I say it. Every part of it is true, but a part of me doesn't want Florian to be the kind of person who'll say yes to money. It breaks a little part of the illusion for me.

He chuckles. "I don't need money. It means enough that I've been able to help one of your friends."

The bell signalling the end of class rings out. I wince, and cover my ears. Is it always that loud? Or just when it comes to private conversations?

"I need to go," I say, a hint of sadness in my voice.
