Mary Mac

Overcorked: Taking a shot too hard without any control

10:21 am

I want to be mad at him, but the questions of my own guilt and regret creep back in. I am softened towards him.

I try not to stare at the familiar and sexy sight of Benton’s backside as he walks in front of me. He wants to show me what he calls the great room first. His pants are just tight enough for me to get a clear view of his muscular rear end and those muscled legs underneath it. His tapered waist widens out into a beautiful set of shoulders.

Shit! His shoulder. I need to ask about it. Should I ask about it, or pretend I didn’t see him take that hit on the ice?

I was too busy being mad at him ten minutes ago that I forgot he was on a stretcher on live TV just over a week ago.

He turns back to look at me. I was so in my own thoughts I didn’t notice that we have arrived at the great room.

He raises his eyebrows at me. “Something on your mind, Mary Mac?”

Something about the way he says my name hits me right in the heart every time. That very specific lilt in his voice. Memories of all the times he’s said my name are forever imprinted on my heart. I look at him.

“I’m sorry about the hit you took,” I say.

His blue eyes cloud over, and his expression turns guarded. “What would you know about that?”

His words are sharp and abrupt. He seems like a wounded animal lashing out at me.

I half expected him to tease me about watching his games on TV, but he doesn’t. He’s quiet, waiting for my answer. The air suddenly feels tense around us, as if one of us is burdened. It’s not me, so it must be him. We were so connected once. I guess I can still sense when things are off with him, even after all these years.

“I was in LA closing a client,” I explain. “The hotel bar was showing the game. That’s when I saw it.”

He nods, looking a little relieved. “Yeah. Apparently the press is having fun making up stories about me and my future in the NHL because of that game.”

“That sucks,” I say, not sure how much I should say or how much comfort I should offer. “They gave you a little time off, huh? And you just up and decided to buy a house… in Atlanta?”

He clams up on me then. “Yep. I did.”

He turns to the massive room before us. I take the hint. Any personal conversations are over. Now it’s time to work.

“This room has so much potential,” I say.

The ceiling is two stories high with double sets of windows that reach toward the tops of the walls, letting in light. Filters on the windows to keep out light and heat. I suspect they are new enough to be adjustable via a remote. This is good. Many upscale homes have them.
