Longest. Week. Ever.

Training Camp started this week, and to say that I wasn’t expecting to have my ass handed to me like this, would be the understatement of the century. It’s the kind of tiredness where you feel like you need help keeping your eyelids up. I almost needed help lacing my skates up this morning. I kept dosing every time I bent over. Rex watched with a smirk the entire time.

Such an asshole.

It’s not like I haven’t been preparing for this, I may be a rookie, but I’m not a complete fucking idiot. I spent months preparing, ensuring I was in the best shape of my life, knowing damn well I’d be fighting for my spot the whole season. I’ve worked my ass off these last few months, skating, working on drills, and kicking my own ass in the gym. I had to make sure I came into camp ready to prove myself. Prove that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

With everything else that’s been going on in my life, between the video, the gnawing fear of never knowing when another message could pop up, and trying to figure out what’s going on with Cassie and me, working out and skating has been the most effective way for me to destress. It keeps my anxiety at a more manageable level.

I’m not saying I’m perfect, I’ve been known to go out with guys and have some drinks and shitty food, but I try to do it in moderation. Thankfully, I know my limits and what my body can handle, which will hopefully help me land my spot on a line. Left wing is a difficult spot to achieve on this team–they’ve always had incredible players. Truthfully, though, and at the risk of sounding conceited, I know how I play. My ability to handle the puck and score like few can make me worth the risk of taking on a rookie.

Even with all the grumbling I’ve done, this week has still been incredible. I thought I would be a little disappointed for not being with the Cyclones, but I’m so fucking happy I ended up with the Ice Hawks, especially having Rex as my coach. He was an incredible hockey player—one I’ve always loved to watch—but I think he might be an even better coach. He’s able to use his skills on the ice to help us be our best. He has this innate ability to see each player differently, in a different light than others can. It allows him to switch things up and make different moves that you’d think would end up being a fucking disaster, but somehow it works, and it works really fucking well. It’s an incredible feat for such a young coach to make such an impact in only his second year coaching.
