Your Readership: Does It Have Purchasing Power?

It is always surprising how often publishing entrepreneurs focus so exclusively on their readership that they overlook the absolute necessity that readership possess purchasing power. In one of my seminars a participant—believe it or not—suggested to the group that a tabloid intended for food stamp recipients and poverty-level families might be a good idea. This person was focused entirely on her own interests and not at all on the marketability of her interests. Even when others in the group asked who the natural advertisers might be in such a publication and found no answer forthcoming, she clung stubbornly to her idea.
