Chapter nine
I whirled, hands up.
A cave opening sat in the field, just the opening, nothing beyond, like someone had cut it out of one picture and edited it badly into another.
A man stood in the mouth, eyes clamped closed.
He had tanned skin and beautiful wavy black hair. And if heâd opened his eyes, I knew theyâd be really dark, almost black.
âMarco,â I said, clasping my hands and pointing at him with both index fingers. âThe assassin who tried to trap us on Halloween? The guy who set that trap? Right?â
âHow the fuck did you do that!â he screamed like I was across the field and not five feet away.
âIâm here, arenât I?â I asked, giggling and clapping my hands together. âI busted outta your prison and into the different dimension. And you canât come in here. You canât even look! Ha!â
I danced in place, giggling and clapping.
He couldnât get me!
âYou just ripped through dimensions!â he screamed. âHow did you do that? How do you fix it?â
I froze, elation dying off.
âUmmmm.â
âThe dimensions could bleed into each other,â he said. âDo you have any idea what youâve done!â
âYou made me!â I yelled back. âI was running from you!â
His mouth worked, and I could practically feel him freaking out.
Then again, that mayâve been me projecting.
How did I close this?
âUm, Carvi!â I yelled. âIf you can hear me, I could really use your help!â
âAre you calling Carvi?â Marco asked.
Like he didnât just hear me?
Wait, maybe he hadnât. He couldnât look in here, so maybe he couldnât hear me, or at least not easily.
âWhat are you?â he yelled.
âBeats me,â I said, shrugging and looking around.
No Carvi.
Hmmmm.
âHey, wolf guy!â I shouted. âFenrir, I think. Are you here?â
âYou rang?â
I whirled around
The giant wolf stood in the field of purple, flashing a giant wolf smile, eyes gleaming in the afternoon sun.
âHey! Boy, am I glad to see you,â I said. âCan you help with this?â
I pointed to the hole.
His jaw fell open.
And he said something in a language I couldnât even begin to guess at.
âSorry, what?â I asked.
âWhat have you done?â he whispered.
âIâ¦â I looked back at the cave.
So, this was bad? Like, really bad?
âI was tryinâ to escape,â I said.
âYou definitely did that,â he snorted, holding up a paw and whispering something into it.
âShe did what!â Carvi snapped a moment later.
I looked around and couldnât see him.
âCarvi?â I called.
It was his turn to curse in some strange language and he popped up in front of me.
âLea! What the fuck!â
âYou go by Carvi now?â Fenrir asked.
Carvi didnât even look at him. âYeah, yeah, yeah, Iâve heard it. Whatâs up, Fenrir? Glad to know itâs really you helping my girl. As for you,â he said to me, stepping forward.
My stomach flipped and I grinned, wide and nervous.
He grabbed my arms and shook me.
Hard.
My brain hurt as it sloshed around my skull.
âHey!â I shook my head as he let me go. âShaken lea syndrome. Donât do that.â
âYou.â He pointed to the rip and back at me. âYou⦠How? I canâtâ¦â
He
