Chapter 2

The scene around me faded. There was a dull buzzing in my ears and my surroundings blurred. I waited patiently for the vision to reveal itself. I felt the urge to turn around. As I did so, I noticed the bookcase at the rear of the room light up as if it had been illuminated from behind. The rest of the room remained out of focus. The books on the shelves started to tremble, looking like they’d come to life. A strange rumbling sound accompanied the moving books. I took a few steps towards the bookcase. A movement from the top shelf caught my attention, and my eyes narrowed as I tried to work out what was happening.

All of a sudden, a book shot out and came towards me. Before I had time to duck, the missile vanished. Confused, I looked left and right, half expecting the book to come at me from another direction.

It didn’t.

But something else happened.

A muffled thud sounded out. The sort of muffled thud which could be a body falling to a carpet.

I felt a chill travel down my back as the shimmering image of a body appeared on the ground right in front of me. The figure was lying face down, and because it was shimmering so much, I couldn’t tell if it was male or female. A dark blue book was lying next to to the figure. It was an actual book, and not a vision one. A strange red substance covered the corner of the book.

I knelt next to the book and gingerly touched the red liquid. It transferred to my fingers for a second before disappearing. I suspected it was blood. A closer examination of the unmoving figure showed a similar red substance on the back of his or her head. It was clear they’d been hit by the book. Fatally? By accident? It must have been an accident unless the bookshelf wasn’t secure and the book had just fallen off. But would a book fall off with enough force to lay someone out?

I doubted that. Which only left one option.

Yet again, I was looking at a possible murder victim, albeit in vision form.

I stared intently at the figure trying to see if there was anything it could tell me. Any distinguishing features which would give me a clue about the victim. As if sensing my inspection, the ghostly figure faded. The rest of the upstairs area came back into clear focus.

The red liquid on the book had gone now. I read the book’s title: Never The Bride The picture showed a woman looking longingly at a young man who was marrying someone else. So, possibly a romance? Was the book important? Was there going to be a murder involving a love triangle?

I picked the book up. I glanced around the café, not sure what to do next.

I jumped as a loud knock came from the main café door downstairs. The book group must be here. I set off towards the stairs once more.
