I don’t know how long I lay there.

“It feels like there’s no point to life,” I whispered, cheek scraping against the floor.

“There isn’t,” a voice said. “There’s no point to anything. That’s the secret to life. Give up. There’s no point. No purpose. Nothing to live for. Just people fooling themselves. Trying to find connection…but there is none. You know it. You knew it when you were fifteen. There’s no such thing as connection. Every time you think you’ve made one, they leave. They abandon you. And you’re left crushed.

“Here’s the secret to life. Don’t care. Don’t care for others. Don’t help them. Because they don’t give a shit about you.

“And you know it.”

My stomach sank, so heavy it was like my insides were made of plutonium.

“Nobody cares,” the voice continued. “If you were at home, nobody would know you’d died for days. Your friends wouldn’t show up to check. When was the last time one of them called you to hang out instead of you calling them?

“If you don’t have people in front of you, there with you, they never think about you at all. They don’t invite you over since Quil dumped you.

“Your so-called friends from before him, when was the last time you heard from them? If you reach out, they bother answering you maybe half the time. When was the last time you saw them?

“And your new friends since you went solo? Do any of them invite you out to do things? Do any of them hang with you when it’s not just convenient?”

I sat up slowly, crawling across the cold floor towards the steel basin holding the basic hospital tools.

“Carvi,” I said, “Carvi cares.”

The voice laughed. “You think Carvi cares? He left you once. You didn’t even do anything. He left you once, and he will again. And your boyfriend? The man who claimed to love you?”

I flinched. “No, don’t go there.”

“He lied. He never loved you, and you know it. Because if he had, he wouldn’t have left you. He would’ve worked with you to fix your problems. He gave up because you weren’t worth it. You were nothing but fun, until you weren’t, and he went to find somebody new. That’s all you were to him, because you’re not worth it. Nobody thinks you’re worth it.

“They never have.

“Think about it. Any time you’re depressed, you’re sad, you hide out in your house, how many people check on you? How many people reach out to make sure you’re okay? How many people are busting down your door to be there for you when you need them? How many people want to be around you when you’re sad, are just there for you?”

I sucked in a sharp breath, but the voice didn’t let up.

“I got your answer,” it said. “Big ol’ goose egg. If people care, they call. Your friends don’t. Your ex doesn’t.”

Ryder, Grant’s voice said, so faint I could barely register it.

I pulled myself up the side of the hospital bed, grabbing the first sharp instrument on the table.
