Coby Vasquez glanced at the patrol cruiser speedometer from the backseat. It read ninety-eight miles per hour. Highway Patrol has all the fun, he thought. Unlike the movies, the life of an FBI agent was bland, with most investigations happening on computers and most arrests going down peacefully. However, tonight’s high-speed escort represented the most excitement he’d experienced during his five years on the job. Unfortunately, tonight, he wasn’t looking forward to the task his ASAC had given him and his partner, Lathan Sinclair. When he joined the FBI, he envisioned hauling in the bad guys, not releasing them back into the wild before they served their time. But here he was, doing just that.

He peeked at his watch. They had no time to spare. With the siren whirring and the overhead red and blue lights spinning, the light night traffic on Highway 99 had thankfully pulled to the slow lane along their route from the resident agency location in Fresno to the United States Penitentiary Atwater. If he calculated correctly, they’d arrive ten minutes before the deadline.

A few miles north of central Merced, the officer peeled off the highway onto Franklin Road. She glanced over her shoulder. “We’re about six minutes out.”

Correction: a twelve-minute cushion. Once they arrived, Coby would have twelve minutes to get Lyle Belcher into the cruiser, on the plane, and dial that satellite phone.

Coby eyed his new partner briefly. Lathan was an unknown. He’d reported to the Fresno office last month, but Coby had yet to see what he was like in the field. Though, his outburst over the jammed copy machine was eye-opening. Kicking a highly sensitive piece of equipment showed himself as a hothead, not a problem solver.

Zipping through the outskirts of town, the officer narrowly avoided a car turning into their traffic lane. The maneuver, coupled with her catlike reflexes, would have earned her a seat behind the wheel with any team in NASCAR. She then zagged her way through potato and tomato fields, past the end of the runway at the regional airport, until making the final sweeping turn onto Federal Way. If memory served, the high-security federal prison and its support buildings were the only structures on this road.

The officer radioed when the prison yard outline, lit by hundreds of fluorescents, came into view. “Approaching via the intake gate.” She slowed but cruised through the entrapment area at a decent clip, coming to a stop at the processing building. “Safe and sound, fellas, with time to spare.”

“Impressive taxi service, Officer Kimball.” Coby leaned forward. “Keep the meter running. We’ll be right back with our package.”

Coby and Sinclair piled out of the cruiser and jogged the short distance to the entrance with their credentials at the ready. The guard at the door put up a hand in a stopping motion and reached back with his other, resting it on the grip of his holstered service weapon. “Wait. I have to confirm your credentials.”

He and Sinclair came to a skidding halt. Sinclair took in a sharp breath.
