Jastine led the group onto the train and checked that it was clear of any attackers.

“Corporal, get everyone else to move to the next car.”

Corporal Jansen acknowledged and began herding the dozen or so passengers forward. He took turns explaining the situation in Dutch and English. Less than a minute later the car was clear of everyone not in their group.

Jastine was a little disconcerted that the people from the ambush hadn’t pursued them beyond the initial attack, but maybe Vasquez, Thompson, and the surviving police were tying them up. She was surprised but thankful for the opportunity to regroup. Something was off about the entire situation, and that made her nervous. The ambush was a good plan, but their response after the SUV broke through lacked focus. She would have pushed harder to pursue.

“Bravo, I want you on the port side covering our flank. I’ll take the starboard side.”

Bains moved to the rear portion of the train car and perched the HK416 on the edge of a seat, scanning the area.

Jastine turned back to the Corporal, Omar, and Zainab then said, “I need you all to stay low and preferably keep at least one seat between you and any one else. I suspect they will come from behind if they come, so be ready. Corporal, I want you to monitor the front of the car. If anyone approaches from the forward cars, let me know immediately.”

As Jastine got into position, the car lurched forward and began its normal route. It was uneventful and a few minutes later they pulled into The Hague Center stop. The regrouping point she chose was across the street, near a large bike storage area that commuters used to go to and from work every day. It was a little more open than she preferred, but she intended to set up a position across the street to watch and see what happened. People passed through the area on their way to jobs or meetings, but it was after peak commuter time and there were fewer groups that there would have been just an hour earlier. She exited the train and walked toward a building labeled Buitenhof and ducked into a small tunnel leading into a courtyard. It was the Dutch Parliament building. There was a natural funnel point with concrete and metal barriers running into a single lane tunnel that entered a courtyard. She appreciated the solid brick construction and the dark tunnel she could observe from. She radioed Bains for them to join her.

Jastine and the four others moved smoothly, not running, toward the area she chose. To each side of the single-lane entrance were two smaller entrances, pedestrian walkways used to exit and enter the courtyard. She instructed Bains to cover the courtyard side of the tunnel with Corporal Jansen, just in case another police officer showed up. She hid in the shadows of the small tunnel and had Omar and Zainab hug the wall behind her. She didn’t need to wait long for something to happen.
