Chapter Thirteen

~ Jackson ~

I held Ze'ev's hand in a tight grip as we walked toward his friends. I had no trouble picking out which one was Gunny. He was the only one glaring at me with a look in his eyes like he thought I was lower than the dung under his shoe.

When we reached them, I tried to ignore the glowering man even as I inched closer to Ze'ev.

"This is Ludulf," Ze'ev said, "although we call him Lu."

"Hello," I said as I held out my hand to him. "I'm Jackson Cantrell. Welcome to my ranch."

The man gave me a simple nod as he shook my hand.

"And this is Gundulf. We call him Gunny."

I didn't even try and shake his hand. I just nodded to him. "Mr. Gunny."

I jumped when Gunny snorted and crossed his arms. I took a quick step back when he narrowed his eyes at me. "I'm going to go back inside and check on the others. I'll make some coffee."

I spun around and took off as fast as my feet could carry me. I'd seen the hatred in Gunny's eyes. It was the same sort of look Carlton used to give me, which meant I didn't want to be anywhere around the man.

I heard growling as I jumped up onto the porch, but I wasn't about to look back. I wanted a closed and locked door between me and Gunny. As soon as I stepped inside the house and closed the door, I started to lock it until I realized that would not keep an enraged wolf out. If anything, it would piss him off.

I leaned back against the door and took a deep breath, trying to steady my shaking nerves. I wasn't sure I could do this. I understood that Ze'ev had called in his friends to help figure out who'd attacked me, but if it put me in even more danger, what was the point?

I pushed away from the door and made my way to the kitchen. It didn't take more than a couple of minutes to get a fresh pot of coffee going or set out cups, cream, and sugar. Once I was done, I headed for the guest room.

Sy sat up and blinked at me when I walked in. I smiled, trying to set him at ease. "Hey, are you hungry?" I asked quietly. I didn't want to disturb the wolf on the bed. I didn't need someone else looking at me like I was bug shit.

Sy nodded so I held out my hand to him. "Come on, I'll get you something."

Sy shot the wolf a quick look then scooted off the bed and walked over to take my hand. As we walked out of the guest room, I could hear raised voices coming from outside, but I had no idea what they were saying and I didn't really care. My ability to deal with crap was reaching the breaking point faster than I could keep up.

"How about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some milk?" I asked as I lifted Sy onto one of the chairs.
